I have owned this 740 for over a year, and it is one of about 25 red block Volvos I have owned (currently have 2 others). I have been working on these for many years, my transportation and a hobby. I traded a 240 for this one because I had a lot of parts on hand that this one needed, like a good headliner from a later 940. It runs great and is completely reliable. I have more cars than I have need for, drive very few miles per week these days. I was not planning to sell so rehabbed it with long-term ownerships in mind, plus I think it is important to preserve these cars as they are pretty special. Ideally, this car would go to a fellow Volvo enthusiast.
Body: No rust-through or soft spots, some light surface rust underneath and few small areas on painted surfaces. The clear coat has failed on the hood and roof (not as bad as hood). Some small dents, very few dings, random scratches, does shine up nice but more of a 10 footer. It does not appear to have been in any appreciable accident or repainted. The p/o stated that the car was from Iowa when he got it a few years back. It is apparent to me that the car was not exposed to as much salt as a MN car.
Interior: Rare Burgundy color. Interior was completely removed by me, and it is clean, smells fine. I rebuilt the driver's seat with foam from a passenger side so it is like new in feel. Seat heater wiring was inspected and tested, but it needs a different relay (have extras). Almost all electricals work including locks, window, lights, sunroof (I removed sunroof and cleaned and replaced parts, works great now), wipers. Does need a horn, and the SRS system is inoperative as it had an aftermarket steering wheel when I bought, stock now. I sourced a good slip ring for it so would probably work if reset, but hey, its a 30 year old airbag so nothing to count on. The center armrest pictured is NOT included in the sale, a stock black one will be. AC and cruise never work on most of these cars at this age unless someone was really motivated.
Suspension, steering, brakes: Car has was lowered with IPD springs, believe the shocks/struts are Bilstein, also has adjustable panhard rod and lower chassis brace. It turns in very nicely, much sharper than stock, very fun. Ride quality is only minimally affected. Flushed steering fluid, very light and no hitches. A p/o did all the suspension stuff, needs nothing. The ENTIRE braking system was replaced by me. Four new rotors (fronts are German-made Zimmerman), four new calipers and pads, plus new master cylinder. I sourced NOS stuff from eBay and new FCP Euro. Obviously new fluid flush.
Engine: Motor sounds great, no piston slap or other noises that I can hear (unlike my 92 940T)), no smoke. It does leak a little oil, gets on the undertray and then drips, so seems like the oil pan. Does not appear to be coming from the front, engine bay is dry when looking at from above. The cylinder head and fuel injectors look too clean for the car's age like they had been redone at one point. The p/o stated that the turbo was rebuilt by a local shop. It boosts ok but seems like the waste gate should be adjusted, car gets up to speed fine but not staggeringly fast. I know these can be fast cars, but I have only owned one Turbo that really did much. Cleaned the throttle body, not very dirty considering it looked like had not been off in a long time. New plugs, rotor, wires, cap by p/o about 2 years ago. Does not use lose coolant or overheat. Started all winter. The exhaust is all new from front pipe back including cat, all Starla stuff from IPD
Transmission shifts fine, though the overdrive button does not work, shifts into all 4 gears easily. Driveline is very smooth. I have a good sense of something amiss in RWD Volvo drive shafts.
Tires are matching set of Kuhmo summer tires, about 40% tread remaining, pretty even. These wheels/tires were on my sister's 940. Balance is good.
Misc: Kenwood stereo sound good, has USB. I have spare parts I will throw in including good low mileage Turbo fuel pump, radiator, relays and more. It is wired for a hitch. I removed the hitch and replaced the under tray with an uncut one. I bought a correct rectangle Volvo receiver, and the hitch could easily be reinstalled (will include both for $100).
I have done my best to describe the car thoroughly and accurately. It is an old, used car, albeit the toughest 30 year-old car one could buy. A new owner should have basic knowledge of RWD Volvos or be willing to learn; there really isn't much to know as they are pretty simple. I maintain Volvos like this for my two sisters and parents and really only get calls when the fuel pump relay dies (always have a spare and know how to replace, takes a minute if you do). Buyer is responsible for shipping. I can hold on to the car for a few weeks while things are arranged. Yes, it could be driven away to anywhere, but there are no guarantees. Please ask questions. The license plate will NOT go with the car if not a MN resident (tabs are good to next March).
