Car description |
---|
I purchased this car in May 1994 from my local Volvo dealer (Moores Volvo). At that time the car had 17,000+ miles, and 2 years left on the warranty. Since then I have been the sole driver.
Other than being a little tougher to start, this car still runs, drives and stops well (drive once a week, drive on interstate).
This car easily passed its last May 2017 inspection (i.e., nothing needed to be fixed) – and it has always been registered, insured and used. It has a clean title.
This car has never been in an accident or fender bender, and has no dents or rust. Until 2005 this car was primarily maintained by my Volvo dealer, and has been regularly serviced at 10K mileintervals.
This car comes with the original Volvo Maintenance Records book – with the dealership stamps.
This car also comes with the original:
All weather floor mats/ trays
Spare tire
Jack & Tool kit
Spare Car key
Trunk/ Glove box key
Owners manual
Cruise control manual
On Call manual
Warranty Information manual
Audio System password card
Consumer Information disclosure brochure
1993 Volvo sales brochure catalog/ Consumer Guide photocopies
If you are looking for a classic 240 in mint condition, this is not that car. If you are looking for a classic 240 that you can restore while you drive it, this might be that car.
The Good
Exterior
- Most of the exterior is original – paint, grill, wheels, "hubcaps", mud flaps, etc.
The tires, windshield, wiper arms, and front& rear lenses have been replaced (still have original lenses).
The overall paint is still in decent shape.
However, the car sits outside and the paint on the roof has faded/ bleached out in places.
Does not have any dents or rust – have never had any body work done.
None of the trim is missing - there are some cosmetic defects.
The headlights and tail lights all work.
All the glass is good.
Interior
Most of the interior is original – seats, carpet, mats, radio & speakers, buttons, gauges, etc.
The odometer and temperature gauge have been replaced.
The seats are in good shape – the Passenger and Back seat have almost no wear.
The dash, glove compartment, vanity mirror, visors, center console, and headliner are in good shape.
The door handles, arm rest, map pockets, and head rests are in good shape.
The carpet is in good shape, and has always been protected by all-weather floor mats/ trays.
Food and drink were not allowed in this car (and yes, some of my GF’ complained).
The interior could use a good cleaning and detailing.
The dash, cabin, and glove compartment lights work.
The power windows, locks, and mirrors work.
The heater and AC work.
The speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and clock work.
The cruise control, turn signals, and intermittent wipers work.
The parking brake works.
The radio and power antenna work.
All knobs and the cigarette lighter are present.
The Bad
Mechanically, the following needs repair/ work:
Odometer needs to be repaired.
AC needs to be recharged.
The cassette deck does not work.
The front speakers need to be remounted (rear speakers are fine).
Also, the temperature gauge will sometimes report that the car is running hot – will enter “red area” on gauge, and then stop.I had it replaced while the car was under warranty
The dealer could never find a reason why the gauge reported that the car is running hot – engine & cooling system all working fine.
The independent mechanic that now services my car came to the same conclusion too – despite gauge reading, the engine & cooling system all working fine. Considered selling the car last Spring, so I had the "situation" checked again - same conclusion (please see April 2016 service report below).
I’ve driven the car all over the state, including the mountainous SW portion of state, with no problems.
The Ugly
The only aggravation this car has ever given me is the Odometer.
It broke in 1999 at 54,800+ miles – and I had it replaced in 1999.Then it broke again in 2010 at 51,300+ miles – and I did not have it replaced/ repaired.
I purchased a new car in 2005, and the 240 became my “spare” car. Since I knew that I was driving under 1,500 miles per year,I just kept track manually.
I prepared a historical ‘Mileage/ Service/ Inspection’ table using my Volvo Maintenance Records book, and service center invoices (please see below).
Based on the blocks of time when the odometer was working, we know that:
I am 99% sure that the total mileage is no more than 135K.And I am 100% sure that the total mileage is less than 150K.
I recognize that this is not an optimal situation; however, all of the records that I used for my mileage analysis will given to the buyer. And ifI did materially misrepresent my mileage analysis, that would beimmediately obvious once you compared my table to the records.
Also,I sell antique globes on Ebay ($1,000 to $4,000) – and have never had a single problem/ discrepancy (or poor Ebay rating).Neither party needs the aggravation & headaches caused bydishonesty.

- The Timing Belt was changed during the 100K Service.
- The paperwork on the Odometer replacement will be include in the 3-ring Service binder given to the buyer.
- What looks like a big scratch under the gas cap is just a reflection of something in the paint.
- The original touchup paint tube will be included too.

- The Heater/ AC fan works just fine - and it has never been replaced.
On Mar-07-18 at 17:54:06 PST, seller added the following information:
- I came back from a short drive tonight, and the radio antenna will not retract.
- If I can not correct this problem by the end of the auction, I will refund $75 to the winning bidder.
- If you have already bid and wish to retract your bid, happy to do so, if you contact me no later than 03/08 @ 9:00 ET.
- Posted a pic of the glove compartment & vanity mirror.
- Posted a pic of the original Spare Tire, Jack and Tools (none have ever been used).
- Posted a 'straight on' pic of both sides.
- I am a non-smoker, and have never smoked in this car.
On Mar-10-18 at 09:32:09 PST, seller added the following information:
- Posted 2 pics of paint fading/ bleaching on roof
- Posted 1 pic of small crack in dash
- Posted 1 pic of engine bay

On Mar-10-18 at 09:37:28 PST, seller added the following information:
1) ENGINE BAY pic > Done
2) ANY MAIN SEAL LEAKS ? > No (I think). Had to look up what a Main Seal Leak was: never had oil in my driveway, or needed to add oil between oil changes. Plus, almost all the service on my car has been done by two groups (dealer, independent mechanic) - and both are good about pointing out potential problems (not just take orders).
3) EVER CLEAN/ REPLACE FLAME TRAP ? > Yes, last was at 130K service.
4) ANY DASH CRACKS ? > Yes, 1 small crack - and 2 normal seam splits (I think) - posted pic.
5) LOWER DOOR/ BODY MOLDING WARPED --- RUST ? > Yes, L & R both warped, - no rust - posted pic.
6) SMALL RUST SPOT ON ROCKER BOTTOM --- HOLE/ SURFACE ? > No, no rust or hole - just my half-axx attempt to keep the body molding from coming off one very bitter winter - you're seeing epoxy putty (and yes, it does embarrass me to have to admit that - but my thought process was: save the molding now, and "erase" my half-axx "fix" later when I did my "one day I will restore to former glory" thing - not quite a 'hold my beer' moment, but close).
OVERALL GOOD JOB DESCRIBING CAR --- JUST NEED BIT MORE DETAIL <Thank you - happy hunting
On Mar-10-18 at 09:48:37 PST, seller added the following information:
- Update on the power antennae mast: 1) Still does not retract, 2) Motor seems to be running OK.
- Despite the large number of chat boards & videos claiming that replacing a power antennae mast is easy, I've decide to leave well enough alone.
- I'm pretty sure everyone who has bid or asked questions has forgotten more about car repair, than I ever knew - so I'm going to let the winning bidder handle things.
- And send them a $75 refund for their time & effort.
On Mar-10-18 at 09:52:28 PST, seller added the following information:
- the 5 year Interstate battery was purchased Jun, 2015
- still under warranty
- paperwork will be in the 3-ring service binder
On Mar-10-18 at 13:22:44 PST, seller added the following information:
https://www.ipdusa.com/products/5670/108262-temperature-board-bypass-kit
There's a circuit board that kind of averages out the temp, and when it goes bad, well, you get erratic/off readings, even though the car is fine. It's a very common failure on these cars. It's easy to bypass the circuit board & get a normal (old school/accurate) reading. Just thought I'd help you with that mystery....one Volvo guy to another. Good luck with your auction,
On Mar-11-18 at 14:49:39 PDT, seller added the following information:
RE: ENGINE BAY DRIVER SIDE ON FIREWALL JUST LEFT OF HINGE, IS THERE A SMALL RUST HOLE ? > I checked, there is no rust hole (please see pic) . Some of the organic debris that works it way into the engine bay has an orange, yellow, brown hue - that might be what you see. I usually clean that stuff out when I wash the car, check the oil, etc - scads of pines, bradford pears, maples, oaks in the neighborhood - and have never noticed any rust, etc. I also inspected the entire engine bay left to right/ back to front - no rust. BTW - I still wash & was this car; which is partially why I think it is still rust free after 25 years. But I never wash & was the engine bay (who does). Volvo definitely deserves a lot of the credit for this cars condition. Happy hunting.
