Up for sale is this very nicely preserved 1973 Volvo 164e sedan. The 164 series is quite rare and was Volvo's attempt to create a luxury sedan to compete with Mercedes and other luxury sedans of the day. The single headlights and dual grilled horns were quite distinctive for this Volvo series. This particular car has only 105,400 documented miles, including over 41 years of care by the original owner.
In the past 1,000 miles, the following service was completed:fresh automatic transmission rebuild with receiptsoil/filter changetune-up with fresh spark plugsfuel tank drained, cleanednew factory spec electric fuel pump and filternew fuel lines
This 164 is rust free except for some typical surface rust underneath (see photos) and a small area of rust that was repair patched and painted just behind the rear passenger wheel well. The paint is the original Cypress green with typical small dings that have been touched up. The car would benefit with a professional compounding and wax but has recently been waxed and looks just great now as a 10-footer.
Nice original manual crank sunroof with no leaks. All glass is clear and all windows roll up and down as they should. New front vent window locks. All chrome and rubber trim is very good- again, the photos tell the story.
The interior is very nice though showing two wear spots. The dash top has one crack (see photo) and is covered by a custom dash cover. The passeneger front seat bottom has a few tears and needs replacement to match the perfect condition of the rest of the leather (not vinyl) interior. The drivers seat also has a small tear on the side as shown. The headliner is excellent. The rear deck lid is excellent.
All guages work except the clock. The fuel gauge occassionally shows empty when the tank is full and then bounces up to half when the tank is half full. The original Volvo AM radio works but sounds like an old AM radio from the 70's and probably needs a new dash speaker. The a/c compressor turns but is not blowing cold. I suspect it needs to be charged and may also need new hoses/seals and connections from not being used for a few years. I drive my collector cars so infrequently that I did not investigate having this service done.
The trunk is exceptionally clean and includes the original jack and tools (see photo). The matched set of Goodyear tires has decent tread remaining and are properly balanced and alligned.
The car runs like a dream and effortlessly cruises the highway at 70 mph. The recently rebuilt automatic transmission shifts perfectly. Those unfamiliar with the Volvo B30 six cylinder fuel injected engine will be impressed with the extra power compared to the popular Volvo 4 cylinder engines that were in all their other cars. The B30 is essentially the same reliable B18/B20 block expanded to 6 cylinders. The 164 was lengthened a bit to accomodate the new engine.
Owned by a Volvo collector and serviced by a local vintage Volvo specialist. Local inspections encouraged. Garaged in Central Virginia, about 2 hours drive southwest of Washington D.C.
