Here's a truly exceptional 1974 Volkswagen Thing Survivor! With less than 31,000 miles on the odometer, a rock-solid, straight and rust-free body, and a recently rebuilt engine, this mildly customized old beach cruiser is an ideal candidate for total restoration or street-ready for some head-turning fun as a daily driver!
The build tag for this car indicates that it was manufactured in August of 1974. A separate sticker (Photo # 11) indicates that the car was modified in November, 1974 by Riviera Motors (a Volkswagen Dealer in Beaverton, Oregon, known especially for their customization / conversions of VW busses). The modifications include a lift kit of approximately 3", a close ratio 4-speed transmission (better acceleration but top speed about 45 mph) dual rear shock mounts, and a roll bar (included but not currently installed).
It would be difficult to overstate the condition of the body on this car. With the exception of the battery-box portion of the floorpan (final photo), there is no rust anywhere on this vehicle. The body is straight and square with all panels very well-fitting. The doors, hood and engine bay door all open, close and latch perfectly. The car has been re-painted at some point in the past, in a very attractive bright red-orange, much more eye-catching than the original highway department orange! The paint is not show quality and features its share of nicks, scratches, and dings commensurate with 46 years of life! It still shines beautifully, however, and looks great from 20 feet!
The custom wheels, luggage rack and bumpers have all been recently powder-coated in a very complimentary bronze color and feature four brand new grippy, B.F. Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A tires.
The engine was recently gone through, with new cylinders one size over stock (1641 CCs), new pistons, gaskets, intake boots, plugs and wires, and the clutch was replaced at the same time. The engine also features an electric choke and starts immediately with two pumps of the gas pedal and a turn of the key EVERY TIME! The car has been wired to be towed behind an RV...just plug in and go.
Additionally the car comes with all of the following:
ROLL BAR, TOW BAR, ALL ORIGINAL WINDOWS (badly yellowed plastic but frames in good useable shape), ORIGINAL CONVERTIBLE TOP FRAME, NEWER BIKINI TOP AND FRAME from "The Thing Shop" (currently on the car) and an AM/FM/MP3 Radio with Remote.
I'm selling this because I've got more toys than room in my shop! Check my Feedback and bid with confidence...no disappointments here! Clean and clear title in hand. Please don't hesitate to holler if you have any questions or want more details...thanks for looking! If you wish to have it delivered by commercial carrier, I will accommodate your shipper in any way necessary. Also, if transportation becomes an issue, I would be willing to deliver it anywhere in the continental U.S. for a negotiated delivery charge.
