Selling my 1984 Ivory (Springtime Yellow) Vanagon Camper. Original engine, 180,575 miles. From Austin, TX, been in the NW and my daily driver for the past few years. After feeling like she was really dragging, I brought her in (06/29/2019) only to learn that compression was low and two of the fuel injectors were periodically missing. I intended to do a Subaru engine swap, but was unable to get the engine and she’s been sitting for more than six months. Consequently, a number of seals and boots have cracked. She runs and drives, but there are a few vacuum leaks and she is running extremely rich.
I took her in to get a scrupulously thorough inspection (02/26/2020), and with the state of things and being out of work I can’t afford to invest in either the immediate repairs or forecasted restorations to the van. She needs some mechanical work. We were out camping in her until last June.
I’ve included as much information about the van and its condition below as I can. I have and can provide an Autocheck VIN history report upon request (no major accidents or incidents to report). • Has some body damage on passenger side from before I purchased it (a side swipe in a parking lot), as well as a big dent in the rear driver side panels. The dent looks scary but it is all body, there is no damage to the frame, sub-frame, engine compartment, etc. Some seam rust in expected areas.
• Working sink. Pump replaced and 10.5 US Gallon integrated freshwater tank/lines thoroughly cleaned and gone over in 2017—all functional, but haven’t been used much in the time since.
• Two flame gas cooker and LP tank work great.
• Some burn marks on the splash plate (before my time), but still folds down and functions to drain dishes after washing.
• “Working†fridge—last time I checked (about a year ago) the fridge was working—i.e. when stopped and level and there was no wind and nobody was moving too fast or breathing too hard I could get the pilot light lit and it cool until the pilot would go out. All to say we used the fridge for dry storage or cooler overflow, it was never worth our time out to fiddle with the fridge. They are notoriously tricky, but it works.
• Original front (24 in x 16 in) and rear (32 in x 16 in) swinging arm tables. The rear table has been modified so that it can extend higher—this is great not only for use of the table (when cooking, eating, etc.), but allows the table to be stored above the burners so that the back cabinets and closet are accessible full-time.
• We put in a fruit basket using eyes that were already in the spice rack, it’s actually really great. Clips to either cabinet or rear swing arm table.
• New GoWesty synthetic pop top with escape hatch and 3-mesh-vent design.
• The floors are all original dark brown carpet—the rear carpet has always remained covered with a rubber mat and is in great shape.
• Curtains and upholstery original. There are a few holes in the driver’s seat, otherwise in good shape.
• Original passenger (180 degree captain’s chair) and driver’s (90 degree) seat swivels
• Instrument Cluster good, missing the plastic for the steering column.
• External hook-ups all work
• Rhino Design Custom Console
• New retrosound stereo (in console) and speakers.
• Warning Lights, headlights, Brake Lights, Turn Signals, Hazards etc. all good (1 of the 2 license plate bulbs out)
• Brand new battery
• Clutch Engagement/shifting good
• Brakes/Brake Hydraulics good
• All terrain tires, lots of life
• Front/Rear Struts and Shocks good
• Engine Coolant/Cooling Fans all good
• The hood supports, or lift tail supports, for the rear hatch have never held the door up. Easy fix, but I’ve made due with a tarp pole
• Some extras like gowesty rack mounts/yakima rack, truck mirrors, window screens, massage chair, hoses/cords, etc.
• Vacuum leaks in the intake inlet boot and at the distributor diaphragm.
• Fuel injectors #4 and #2 miss
• You’ll likely want to change the Air Filter, oil/filter, transmission fluid, maybe the fuel filters.
• Spark Plugs Worn: I’d put in a new distributor cap, wires, rotor, and plugs.
• Passenger side drive axel boot split, driver side is starting to crack
