The Story
This is my 1990 Vanagon Weekender, Subaru SVX 3.3L 6-cylinder. Below 80,000 miles on the motor, mileage on the vehicle is unknown. Professionally maintained with plenty of new parts. It runs great and is very fast. The van has lived on Maui for the past nearly 9 years. Since 2016, I also own a 1991 Doka, that became my daily driver. Hence, I decided to sell this Vanagon. My friend in the Seattle area is helping me with this sale.
I am not at all a technical person! The truth is that I was born in Germany and grew up with these vans. Other kids were counting Porsche and Audi on the Autobahn, while I always wanted a real Vanagon. This was supposed to be my “escape-vehicleâ€, never to be sold. It’s completely personalized, how I wanted it and how it made sense for me on Maui.
My Original Purchase
December 2010 from Subagon in Redding, CA (business closed)
Subaru conversion with 6-cylinder 3.3L SVX was done in fall of 2010
Japanese domestic market (JDM) motor from Aatarco in Richmond, CA (business closed)
Installed with less then 60,000 miles
New timing belt, new crank and cam seals
2†custom tubular bumpers with rear hitch
Suspension lift and level, Bilstein shocks, 5x Borbet rims
Central locking, power windows, cruise control, air-conditioning
Front disc brakes
Shipped to Maui in January 2011
On Maui-time between January 2011 and October of 2019
During this time, and with all the time-consuming work that was done here on Maui, I hardly had time to ride the van. I might have added 15,000 miles in total, but certainly less than 20,000 miles to the odometer. Busy at work, I did not manage to sleep in it more than half a dozen times. The interior still really feels and smells like new.
VWonMaui on my Vanagon?!
The logos on all four sides are airbrushed onto the paint, prior to clear-coating
With my initials, most people on Maui know me simply as “VWâ€
The rear hatch center VW logo got removed, no holes for the Vanagon emblem either
The rear wiper hole got patched, also the front end antenna hole
We also removed the fiberglass roof’s pop-top window, hole is patched to surfboard-quality :)
This part of the roof will need re-painting when you get the logos removed ?!!
Windows-out paint job, paint is 2010-12 Porsche eis-blau perl-effect, code is LM5Q
All rust and metal-filling materials got removed prior to priming and painting!
Front disc break calipers painted in van’s ice blue color
The Interior
Stripped to the bones with completely re-built interior
New front windshield window
All other windows have a mirror tint and a 2nd black tint over it, can't look inside
All original interior curtains and hooks removed
Weekender trunk cabinets removed, custom aluminum cover for AC installed
Bench & jump seat re-upholstered, no holes for headrests, no seatbelts in the back
All sidewalls, interior panels, ceilings and the dashboard are re-finished
White-faced instrument panel
Popup roof, all rods properly re-finished / painted
Upper bed and lower bed mattresses are re-done
OEM VW replacement engine cover in black
Custom wood piece to cover the engine cover, carpet-covered and built to height of the folded down bench / mattress height for sleeping — this was the foot end for me :)
Long LED light above the table
Hard vinyl table cover, very rugged
Carpeted storage under the bench seat, with stereo components
Also under the bench: deep-cycle 2nd battery, runs separate, van will start if this is empty
Premium stereo system, with new speakers, base, amp, professional wiring
Stereo system includes an Alpine sub-woofer in the custom ‘seat box’ by the sliding door
Key-fob alarm system
OEM dual-tone original sound VW horn
GTI steering wheel, I don’t know the year but it’s from a 90’s Golf
Sparco-logo Audi TT racing seats, custom installation, adjustable
Custom carpet for the floor in the center of the passenger room, to place in front outside
A switch behind the driver seat interrupts the gas pump flow, anti-theft switch ?!
Extra power plug installed on the side of the jump seat
Heavy duty shocks to hold the rear hatch open
The AC was recharged and works as it should
New actuators for the central locking system
GoWesty additions made during this time
Premium Bosch heavy duty wiper blade set, wiper arms refurbished and painted

Pop-top tent in gray with removable windows
Fuel tank with re-seal kit
Complete new rear drive axle with all seals
Sway bar with links and bushings
Metal shifter knob with stash compartment
Plastic compartment box over the original dashboard ashtray location
Front underbody replacement steel plate, previous spare tire location
Durable floor mats for the driver and passenger side
Miscellaneous Notes
VanCafe, all window, body, door and hatch seals
SmallCar exhaust system and muffler
SmallCar oil dip stick
OEM VW steel keys with the black rubber around the head, cut in Germany :)
K&N air filter
Auxiliary reverse LED light kit, the little round one on the photos, very bright
Auxiliary LED strip in the front, separate switch on the dashboard
Fiamma awning feet installed on the right side of the outside body
6x Yakima mounting brackets, 3 on each side of the pop-top roof
Five tires including a spare tire on the 5th rim, Good Year Assurance, M+S 215 / 70R16. The van runs super smooth on these tires, even at high speeds, very enjoyable. Less than 3,000 miles for sure. The Borbet rims are made black and have locks.
My Vanagon was always properly serviced by a professional licensed mechanic. The last couple of years by KarMart, Maui’s official VW dealership. I shipped the car to the mainland for this sale!
