For the first time in the almost 20 years I've owned this Double Cab, it is up for sale. The 2-4 times a year that I take it out just doesn't justify keeping it any more. I purchased this Double Cab from a gentleman who went by the name "VW George" from the Lower Hudson Valley VW Society. He purchased it from a gentleman who brought the truck from California to New York State.
I paid a pretty penny for it back then as I could see what it is. An unmolested, unrestored, original paint Double Cab. Since I restored a few buses in my day I wanted to own one that I could just jump in and drive anywhere.
As with any older classic vehicle, its best to look at it in person when possible. For mileageI put 99,999 as in my opinion its irrelevant,as its extremely easy on most older vehicles to swap the speedometer head with one showing lower mileage. Whats more important is the condition of the body and undercarriage and also the motor and transmission.
If your from the NJ area and go to the CJVWS Flanders show than you have seen this Double Cab there either in the swap section, or a couple of times in the show line up.
Brazilian roof height canopy was purchased from California and shipped out to me. I sand blasted the frame and sprayed it with non-sanding epoxy primer in a color extremely close to original. I then had all new piping sewed in the canopy canvas.
Trans Nose Cone Rebuild kit installed along with Gene Berg Shifter (shifts like butter)
Engine Rebuilt (by VW George when he owned it) with GENE BERG parts:
GB-002 - Pistons & Cylinders
GB-203 - Wrist Pin Keepers
GB-210 - Oil Sump
GB-341 - Valve adjustment screws
GB-405 - Rocket Shaft Kit
GB-439 - Front Pulley
GB-476 - Kadron Carbs
GB-622 - 009 Distributor
Gene Berg Semi Cut Heads
NOS Steering box purchased and installed from Wolfsburg West
Bay Window Ambulance fans installed with correct switch (work great).
Every brown spot you see on the truck is from California owner putting RUST CONVERTER on every scratch and paint rub off area thus converting it to brown and effectively sealing it in his mind (I guess).
Underside of this bus is perfect.Garaged for the last 30 years of it's life.
Correct 8 ply tires including never used spare - Hankook RA08
10/18 - All wheel cylinders replaced with FTE brand ones. Old brake fluid flushed and refilled with Castrol Dot 4 Synthetic.
CASH ONLY sale.
