1978 Volkswagen Westfalia
Correct Sage Green exterior (code L63H) with white roof and trim Original Camping Green Yellow Plaid interior (code 34) 2.0L flat four-cylinder engine with two-barrel carburetor and electronic ignition Four-speed manual transmission Factory cabinets and the hard to find detachable table, with sink and stove New correct camper top with zip up windows and full original plaid bed Includes all Included with curtains and original snap-in screen for rear hatch Included with the original factory front cab child’s cot Texas Westy with solid original undercarriageJust in time for summer camping in complete style, this bright green 1978 Volkswagen Bus with the Westfalia Camper has arrived at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This Westy fortunately still retains most of its original green plaid interior. It has not yet suffered from a custom Pintrest project from a previous owner’s wife, as we have seen with many Westfalia buses as of late. The exterior is finished in correct Sage green and the top has recently been refurnished to correct standards and is included with the original plaid bed. This Westy is ready to enjoy as the values are steadily increasing, as we are now paying double for these T2 Westfalia buses from the ones we purchased just 3 short years ago!
Finished in brilliant Sage Green (code L63H) with Pastell White roof (code L90D) and accents, this late bay’s paint and trim are in overall very good condition. The glass is in good order, include the rear window with its rear defroster grid. The van’s lights are in similar condition, including its Hella headlights, are clear and intact.
The bus body is solid and straight while the engine bay is tidy and the original green sage paint is still present in the engine compartment. This van sports a new camper top along with a factory detachable table, stove and sink. The cargo area looks great with a small mattress and shelving unit over the engine compartment. Also included with the hard to find original front cab child cot!
This Bay rolls on Hankook Optimo radials, size 205/70R14 at all four corners, and each tire surrounds a steel wheel topped by a full factory vented moon wheel cover with a cap and white beauty rings. The wheels and tires look great.
Out back is a 2.0L flat four-cylinder engine, with a two-barrel carburetor, and which featured hydraulic valve lifters, eliminating the need to periodically adjust the valve clearances as on earlier models. Nineteen seventy-eight was the first year for electronic ignition, utilizing a hall effect sensor and digital controller, eliminating maintenance-requiring contact-breaker points. As with all Transporter engines, the focus in development was not on power, but on low-end torque. The Type 4 engines were reportedly more robust and durable than the Type 1 engines, particularly in Transporter service. Buttoned to this motor is a four-speed manual transmission. This late bay has front disc and rear drum brakes.
Inside, the upholstery is done Camping Green Yellow Plaid (code 34) and is still overall original. The high-backed front buckets are in good order overall, as is the black carpeting. The original two-spoke factory steering wheel is present and looks good. The inner door panels are in decent order while the dash is in very good order, complete with VDO gauges. The shift lever is topped by a wood VW knob. In back, there’s a factory table, sink and stove, along with extra seating and storage. Rounding out the interior is a Kenwood AM/FM stereo with CD player but is currently inoperable. The Westfalia Caamper top’s fabric and screens are in good condition and zip up as they should.
Volkswagen Westfalia Camper was a conversion of Volkswagen Type 2 sold from the early 1950s to 2003. Volkswagen subcontracted the modifications to the company Westfalia-Werke in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. Standard equipment consisted of:
Various foldout seat arrangements for sleeping Birch plywood interior panels Laminated plywood cabinetry for storage Ice box or cold-box Sink (some models) Water storage and pump Electrical hookups Curtains Screened jalousie (Venetian blind) windows Laminated folding tableCompetition to this bus in 1978 included Chevrolet’s G10 Van, Dodge’s B-Series Ram Van, Ford’s Econoline Van and GMC’s VanDura.
Volkswagen fans who seek a different sort of T2 should check out this correct 1978 Westy, as should anyone who’s looking for a rolling camper to use this summer and fall at their lake house, favorite camping getaway or for just an overnight trip to the woods. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars and check this one out soon before its gone!
