Restored 1962 Volkswagen VW Double Cab Split Window Bus
Here we have for sale a very rare and highly collectible 1962 Volkswagen VW double cab split window bus. These double cab pickup trucks have become one of the most highly sought after and collected early Volkswagen transporters that you can buy today. They are rare and hard to find for sale in this condition. The bus was restored many years ago and looks awesome! The bus is very clean and turns heads everywhere you go. I own alot of vintage cars in my collection and bar none, this is the car that grabs every bodies attention. People stop me every single time I am in a parking lot, or driving they give the thumbs up. The styling of a split window Volkswagen is just so timeless and nostalgic. Nothing looks as good as an Split Window VW bus driving down the road. The truck was restored and taken down to the bare shell and painted then. Everything was removed before it was painted and then put back together again. The same green color is on the inside, under the seats, in the engine compartment and on the outside. The paint is in great shape, and looks great with the two tone white stripe on it. There is some areas of bubbling by the front window and down in the front nose by the front bumper. There are some chips and scratches from being driven quite frequently over the years. I drove this bus for the majority of the spring, summer, and fall times here in Reno. It has never skipped a beat for me. Everything works and is very reliable. The body is in great shape and is very straight. There was rust repair done when the truck was painted. The rear wheel wells where modified to match the arch of the front wheel wells. It was done very nicely! The tires are almost brand new on the bus. The wheels are original split window bus 15" wheels. The front wheels are the rare early "crows foot" wheel that has a narrow offset to bring the wheels in just ever so slightly. The hubcaps are brand new. The trim rings are new. I powder coated the wheels and front and rear slash Euro bumpers the matching white color. The bus has been lowered 3.5" in the front and less in the rear. I used flipped bus splindles from Greg Noble up in Washington, they are very nicely built spindles. The rear was lowered by just re indexing the torsion plate in the rear. I wanted to do it this way to give the bus a nice look and two, if I ever wanted to bring it back up to stock height, that with a couple of hours and some stock splines, it could be stock height again with not that much effort. The bus was also professionally pin striped by a graphics artist in town. It is pin striped where the white and green come together. The interior is in really nice condition. I sourced out all of the necessary materials that you would of found in a Volkswagen transporter in 1962. The seat covers are from Mat Miller and are the absolute perfect match covers to what would have come front he factory. I don't believe you can get these covers anymore and I had Mat professionally install them on the original frames. The original 1962 humpback seat is still in the bus, which is rare to find nowadays. The door panels and headliner are from Clara on thesamba, who also makes perfect original matching door panels for these early transporter buses. We spent a bunch of money on the panels and seat covers because that is what should be in the bus. I didn't want anything other then what you would of seen in bus come with from the factory. The dash is in nice shape on the bus and has the original working speedometer and gas gauge. The extra gauges were added with no additional holes drilled to mount them. The additional gauges are a VDO tach, oil temp, amp, and oil pressure gauges which all work perfect. These are necessary to keep an eye on what your engine is doing. The dash has a couple of extra switches added to it, one for the washer fluid, one to manually turn on the oil cooler fans and it has an old radio in the dash, which has been modified to make fit, and there are additional speakers mounted under the parcel tray, the header panel and under the rear seat pedestal. The stereo sounds real nice in the bus, perfect for cruising! The bus has all original Volkswagen glass in it, with replaced window seals. The windshield wipers have been upgraded to a two speed motor. The original chrome ice pick door handles are original and have some patina from age. The bus still comes with its original VW key that matches the ignition and doors. The electrical all works on the bus, inside and outside. There are some minor cracks in the original steering wheel. The brakes have been rebuilt and the bus stops straight. The engine and transmission are new and work great! The engine is a new built 1776cc built twin carburetor engine. This thing sure has a lot of pep to it! The engine has what it looks like ported heads, and big 40 Weber carburetors on it. The engine has an engle 110 cam in it and a high performance Bosch 010 cast iron distributor with a Pertronix electronic ignition. This bus runs amazing and no more fiddling with points. The engine has built using a new block. Its also running a deep sump oil cooler with three additional oil coolers under the car. I believe its close to a 7 quart system on the truck. This engine doesn't get over 180degrees in the summer months. I haven't had an overheating problem with it, ever. I have always used expensive Joe Gibbs aircooler oil with high zinc and phosphorus levels to help lubicated the engine and camshaft. Routine maintenance every three thousand miles as all my VW's get. The reduction gear box transmission has been gone through but its a little bit of a mystery because it has different side covers on it then factory, but I am just not exactly sure what's been done on the inside. I can cruise down the freeway at 65mph with these smaller then stock tires on the bus. With original size tires, it would easily cruise at 70-75mph. The truck shifts through all of the gears and the clutch works great. I put an expensive and trick looking Vintage Speed stainless steel exhaust system on the truck that looks amazing and sounds great! I am still running the heater boxes in the truck. The truck bed is nice and solid. The gates are nice but not perfect, they do have some dings and rust underneath the gates that you don't even see. I used and have transported many things in the bed over the years. The jack points have been removed at some point it its life. There is a little rust in the inside of the wheel well that you can see from looking at the bus without crawling under it. Overall this is a really nice older restored double cab that you can have a blast with, but its not so perfect that you are afraid to drive it.
