My wife and I bought this beautiful van 13 years ago. There were two owners before us. The original owner had the vehicle in Georgia. The man we bought from lived in Rhode Island, had worked in the auto industry, and took excellent care of the vehicle. We have all his service receipts, as well as all of ours. We too have carefully maintained this vehicle - repairing, replacing, and upgrading on a regular basis, and having all work done by VW specialist Bill Benz at Engines By Benz, in Rhode Island. We have kept it stored in a climate-controlled garage. It is a fully-functioning 1986 water-cooled, gasoline-powered, 2 Wheel Drive, 4-speed manual transmission Westy full camper with cloth seats in excellent condition. It sleeps 4 adults.
The 1986-1991s are easily identified by their rectangular (instead of round) headlights, and are considered the ideal Vanagon due to improved exhaust, fuel injection, brakes, and most importantly the water cooled system, which was completely re-worked for the 1986 model (info from gowesty.com).
Partial list of repairs, replacements, and upgrades:- Rebuilt engine, with only 10,200 miles on it.- Replaced many parts: Fuel Tank, and Fuel Lines. Front and Rear Shocks. Entire exhaust system. Front Rotors, Bearings + Seals. Break Pads, Hoses, Shoes, and Cylinders.- New Propane Tank (works great, has propane in it).- Working Air Conditioning.- Rear seatbelts converted to cross-body, for safety and for use with child seats.- Installed a reinforced tow hitch (works with bike rack, listed below).
Included in this sale:- Side Door Sun / Rain Awning (attaches above sliding door when parked / rolls-down into bag when not in use).- Trailer Hitch, + Yakima Swing-away bike rack.- Camp4 Nizza - German Westy tent. Really cool - attaches directly to the open side-door of the van, extending the van interior out into essentially a screened in room when parked. Instruction manual included.- All screens (eg. screens in the back when open), curtains, and fold-away tables.- Water and Electric hook-up hoses / cables.- Vehicle front grill cover.
Additional Notes:- I just put in a brand new battery.- Fridge, sink, and stove work well - with the exception that we find the fridge is not working properly when in propane-cool mode. It works normally when driving, or when plugged in.- The radio / tape deck is old, and doesn't work well. We use a portable bluetooth speaker, so have not bothered updating this.- We have made some repairs to the pop-top canopy. Included in the attached photos, for your reference. Other areas will undoubtedly eventually need repair.- Before it was ours, the sliding door handle had been replaced. Therefore there is one extra key on the ring that belongs only to that door.
