Car description |
---|
We bought this car on July 13, 1983. We had wanted one since they ended them in 1979, and it had to be the red one, Mars Red. It had 60,900 miles on it. We have been the only two drivers of this car, no kids around in our lives.
We have loved this car, and it is still our vehicle when we are in the US. We live in Mexico most of the time now, and are soon going to permanently relocate there. The last 5+ years we have put less than 2,000 miles a year on it.
We cannot take this car to Mexico. Period, there is no way around it. Can't be done, impossible. Can you tell we tried????
This car has never been restored because it hasn't needed it. It has always lived under a car cover (Evolution 5, custom, included). It's never been in an accident. It has been repainted twice, always the same color. It has had the top and headliner replaced twice, with the original types. The engine has been rebuilt periodically, as needed. All major work on this car was done by Gary Betz, Saticoy, California, very recently retired.
The last paint, engine and top were in 2013-2014. We left the car with Gary for 5 months, it went to the painter, then to the top guy. In 2014 Gary did not rebuild the engine, he replaced it with a German one. No, not from Brazil, he had the time and desire to find us a Brand New German Engine, one of the last available. He is a purist, and has always loved this car. He recently sold his wife's, that was exactly like this one, for $14,500 and it was shipped to Germany.
Yes, it needs a bath and vacuum, but that's easy. No commercial car washes for this baby.
In California, in 1979, the license plates were blue. This car has the blue license plate with, "ILYKRED" as the plate.
When I got my first car, my father, who had trucks, made me agree that every vehicle I owned would have a complete log kept in it. I mean COMPLETE! Every gas fill, oil change, tune-up, brake job, literally everything. We last filled up with gas on July 12, and put in 6.5 gallons (premium) at $2.95. This log is priceless for diagnostics. Feel a miss? When did it have it's last tune-up? It's right there in the glove box with the original owners manual and other booklet.
Smogging air cooled VW;s is difficult. We found the best way was to do a tune-up and valve adjustment, then take it to the mechanic and pay to have him get it through smog. It was last smogged in April of this year. It has been more than 90 days, so it will have to be smogged again when it's sold. WE ARE NOT PROVIDING THE SMOG CERTIFICATE UPON SALE.
Hate to sell this, don't want to, and we aren't flexible on the price. It's an icon on our beach! More pictures on request.
