Are you looking for an early unmolested California Classic VW Beetle? This is it... a local garage find and one of the few fairly unmolested California vehicles you will probably see for sale.
This VW was purchased by the current elderly owner in 2001 from Anaheim, California and stored winters since the purchase. Note it has only been driven a few hundred miles since 2006 as you can see by the oil change sticker. It has an ultra low 78946 miles. Please read on for further details, photos and videos. Condition Report:
This vehicle has been stored for years in a garage and appears to be a complete fairly unmolested vehicle.
It currently runs and drives but it should be safety checked (oil change, tires, brakes, fuel system, etc) before use due to extended storage. The brakes are very soft and should be looked at prior to driving.
Cosmetically, the paint is beautiful with only a few small flaws as shown in the photos. We are unsure if this is all original paint but appears to be at least the original color. We could not find overspray but did see the rear deck lid may have been darker blue and the rear apron may have been green.
The seats, gauge, and other components are nice. The glass also appears to be original aside from the windshield. The title is clear and the owner will have the lien removed before the sale end as it was paid off years ago. Look at the lack of any rust on this vehicle. It is one of the cleanest examples we have sold.
It does have a few small modifications done while in California: - Addition of the tachometer
- Has older style gas tank that you fill by lifting the trunk lid
- The engine was converted from a 1500CC to a 1600CC, with an Engle 100 camshaft, and a Bosch 009 distributor. The camshaft is slightly larger to give it more power in the 4000-4500 RPM range. The result is roughly 110 HP.
- The front brakes are Karmann Ghia and rear brakes are standard Beetle were are told.
- The Transaxle has 1968 gearing with a 4.37 ring and pinion replacing the 4.12 factory setup, along with being converted to accommodate 4 spider gears instead of 2 from the factory, as well as a heavy duty aluminum side plate. This helps accommodate the 110 HP engine conversion.
- The wiper assy is out of a 1971 Beetle which has a splined shaft instead of the earlier set screw. The washer bottle and motor is a VW Cabriolet.
To summarize, it is our opinion that this vintage 1968 VW Beetle would make an excellent addition to that VW collection. Also note that as mentioned, it is being sold as-is-where-is and should be considered a project. This rare fairly unmolested find would make a great project for the enthusiast or collector.
