Factory black VW bugs are hard to find, especially from the earlier years. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is excited to offer this 1958 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, a black-plate California car. That has resided in Sierra Madre, LA Since 2005 (12 years).
This example, made sometime between December 31, 1957 and July 1958, is in excellent condition. It was purchased at Chick Iverson Volkswagen in Newport Beach, California, which is reportedly the current site of Newport Beach Porsche. The car was sold new to an employee at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California because the plate began with JPL, a combination only available to those employees.
Dressed in black, its recent professional repaint glistens in the light and its trim is well sorted and ready to win trophies. This bug's windows are clear and crack-free. Note that it has the pop-out rear side glass common on later Bugs. The car has its original Hella headlights, haze-free and intact, and the rest of its lights are in great shape. The car rolls on Commander bias-ply wide whitewall tires and factory moon wheel covers. The car's body panels are straight and solid. Its factory folding fabric roof looks very good and the car's engine bay is very tidy and nicely detailed.
For 1958, all Beetles received a revised instrument panel and a larger rectangular rear window replaced the previous oval design. Earlier in the decade, VW fitted its cars with four-wheel hydraulic brakes. Under its rear bonnet, the engine has been upgraded to the 1200cc engine, making daily commuting much easier. The horn in inoperable too. The engine is hooked to a four-speed manual transmission. The car has independent front suspension with swing axles, trailing arms and torsion bars in the rear. The car has also undergone a recent tune-up and front end alignment.
Inside, its new Terra Cotta interior, with contrasting white piping, looks fantastic. The front buckets, rear bench, black carpeting and white headliner all look beautiful. The black instrument panel, with its VDO gauges and original, white, two-spoke steering wheel, appear new. The inner door panels, which continue the theme set by the seats, look great, and the mirror glass and white shift lever round out the interior. This is a radio-delete model.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 98,851 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, exempt mileage title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
