Car description |

I need to thin out my car collection so I'm listing this sweet little 1964 VW Beetle. It runs and drives pretty well and would be a great project car or a fun driver. It's got a few bumps and bruises but overall it's in nice shape for an unrestored 53 year old car. When I bought it last summer, it had been sitting in a garage for a few years after the previous owner passed away. His wife, who sold me the car didn't remember exactly how long they had owned it but she thought they bought it sometime in the late 60's. She wasn't able to recall any more of it's history but the car speaks for itself.
When I got it home, I put in some gas, a fresh 6 volt battery and to my surprise, it fired right up. It ran ok but could have been better so I adjusted the valves, changed the oil as well and gave it a tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor and points). I also replaced all the fuel lines and filter. It had absolutely no brakes so the car got a new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and flexible hoses. Now it stops great for an old bug. The tires aren't anywhere near new but they have some life left. none of the lights worked when I got the car so I spent some time cleaning contacts, replacing bulbs etc and now everything but the radio works. i also replaced the swingaxle boots and changed the transmission fluid. the transmission leaks a bit from the side plates but it still shifts great.
The car has been repainted at some point in it's life but it was clearly a long time ago. It looks like the right rear fender was originally blue and the underside of the the front hood is white. The decklid is from a '65 bug. I'm guessing that it was involved in a minor accident once upon a time. The windshield has a crack and the chrome is pitted. I did put on a fresh set of wiper blades though. Underneath the car, there is some rust in the usual spots. The battery tray needs a good replacing as well as the outer rockers/running board fastening panels. There is a bit more rust in the front and rear wheel wells. Typical stuff.
Overall, this bug is a fun little car in decent condition for it's age. It starts up every time and drives pretty well. It has a ton of character and gets attention where ever you go. I have done my best to describe the car accurately as I want the new owner to be happy with their purchase. I'm happy to sell to overseas bidders. The engine is a 1200cc "40 horse" engine. I don't know if it's original to the car but it is the correct engine for it. The charge light flickers at idle sometimes but I've never had to recharge the battery. The radio doesn't work. it does make a little noise when when you turn it on but no music. The antenna is missing so that may be the cause of it. Also, the front seats appear to from a '65 or '66 beetle.
