Time to sell my baby …. I'm listing my 1973 VW bus sunroof model. It's in very nice overall condition and has one spot of minor surface rust. It is 95% restored and still a work in progress but now between working fulltime, going to school full time and just started a new photography business, my hobbies have to take a back seat. I purchased her from Scott VW Works in Pueblo CO three years ago. She runs and drives very well and have taken her over a number of Rocky Mountain passes and thru down town Denver Traffic all without a hitch.
I have no service history before I bought her three years ago but since then I added a few things:
- New headliner May 16
- New period/time correct tires July 15
- New exhaust/muffler July 15
- Painted the original wheels May 15
- New door panels all around May 16
- New kick panels May 16
- New carpeting throughout May 16
- New seat upholstery front and rear May 16
- Sound deadening insulation July 15
- New visors July 15
- New radio May 15
- New windshield wipers May 15
- New dash top May 15
- New rubber trim around most windows May 16
The next areas that I was planning on addressing are:
- The paint either needs to be redone or professionally cut through. It is simply old and flat. You can still see some of the peace sign sticker shadows. I was told by two paint and body shops that it simply needs to be “cut through” and it’ll look great. I just never got around to it. Paint is beginning to chip above license plate holder. The original colors were white and blue but somewhere along the way someone decided to paint it yellow and I believe the last owners repainted back to the original blue/white.
- The second is the dash bumper need to be replace due to cracking caused by the sun. I stopped the cracking from expanding and getting worse by injecting some foam filler but it needs to be replaced.
- I replaced one of the two pulleys for the sun roof but recommend replacing the second. It will open but closing can be a challenge.
Externally, it's a "ten footer". Virtually no rust except for some minor surface areas. None on the batter box nor underneath…very rare.
I don't believe the engine is an original but it is type 4 engine. It runs well and doesn't have any major oil leaks. The transmission shifts smoothly and it had no problem holding 70 mph on the interstate. It steers and stops well. The odometer reads 31,079 but it’s clearly turned over at least once.
The interior, really nice as it needed the most work when I purchased her. The front and rear seats are in new condition as I had new seat upholstery professionally installed in May 2016. At the same time I had new headliner along with new door and kick panels installed. New visors and carpeting throughout. There is no middle row seat. I replaced the radio with a blue tooth Retrosound radio and speakers are behind the passenger and drivers seats as I didn’t want to cut into the door panels.
I’ve owned two busses previously and this is by far the best. My estimation is she is $3-5 K away from being a local show winner, if that’s what you want.
In addition you also get a never used “Add A Room” tent that comes with the bus. This was a gift from my wife but I never got to utilize it for camping. $399 from Bus Depot http://www.busdepot.com/addg
I’ve provided an honest description of this bus and pictures that show the overall condition of it as I want the new owner to be happy with their purchase. I'm located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Overseas buyers are welcome. Buyer is responsible for shipping arrangements. Please feel free to ask any questions. Thanks!
