Car description |
---|
My wife and I purchased this in the summer of 2011 to use as a runabout. Between then and now it has followed us faithfully from NY to NJ, and now out to New Mexico. We love it, and are sad to see it go, but need the money. I hope it goes to a good home.
Vehicle is in Bloomfield, NM and available for inspection at your convenience. I will release to your shipper upon receipt of funds, or you can pick it up. Comes with a clear NY title.
The Good:
· My father-in-law, a retired Volkswagen mechanic (owned his own shop for 20 years) rebuilt the motor about 1,000 miles ago, using all new German parts.
· Pistons/rings, valves, bearings (he split the case to do it right), seals, engine mounts, engine compartment seal, clutch, throw out bearing are all new.
· Added an oil filter + pump from the Mexican beetle for longevity. Still change the oil as scheduled, but I like to have the oil filter. Uses a tiny filter from a Toyota Yaris.
· Brand new fuel tank
· New brakes (~2,000 miles ago)
· Shift rod coupler / bushings done
· Doesn’t have that cursed 009 distributor, nor a Brazilian carb. Starts strong on the first try, runs beautifully.
The Bad:
· There is rust on the floor pan under the battery, and on the rocker panels. It does not seem to have gone into the heater channels yet (channel itself solid; just the outer rocker eaten away), and the car has been garaged or covered with a Typhoon cover the whole time we’ve owned it. Rocker panels to fix are included, but I don’t know how to weld and don’t have the money to have it done.
· Needs tires. They hold enough air for riding around, but they leak slowly (~15 years old)
The Ugly:
· Some minor dings/dents and patches of surface rust I haven’t messed with, as I’m not a body expert. See photos. Notable: under rear window, and on rear right side where the door would be.
· Tear in the headliner caused when an idiot (me) pushed a long cardboard box in there without looking where he was shoving. See photos.
· The passenger mirror is not attached. Needs the threaded collar inside the door, which is missing.
· The antenna is loose; plastic ring cracked. Needs a new antenna.
· Ugly repair job on front seats - stitches show in off-color thread on back of seat bottoms (not my repair!)
The Extras:
· The aforementioned rocker panels, and floor pan quarters, to address the rust issues
· The Bentley manual, the Haynes manual, and the beloved Muir book
· Foam seat cushions to replace the ones in the front seat, and hog ring kit w/pliers to make it happen
· A seal kit to re-do the beading and body seals
· An extra headlight trim ring
· The Typhoon cover. Some rips/tears, because it’s been doing its job protecting the car. $200 cover.
· Various hardware (screws, hoses, clamps etc)
