This Auction is for my 1973 Volkswagen Bug with EMPI GTVequipment. This an awesome little car that gets compliments everywhere I go! I hate to use the term "Barn find" but when I bought this car, t was someone's project that had been disassembled and left sitting in a garage untouched for many years. I purchased it in summer of 2014 and I've done a ton of work to it since then. I would love to keep it but i need to move on to some other projects. What most attracted me to it was the original paint with the EMPI GTV stripes ans all of the period accesories. As far as I know the EMPI GTV bugs were a dealer installed accessory package and there were four trim levels available. In addition to the EMPI C-stripes, he exterior of this car features front and rear gravel guards, fuel door trim, umper guards and of course, he EMPI Sprint Star wheels - hard to find 4.5" front with 135/15 tires and 5.5" out back with 165/15 tires. Inside, t has a set of wooden dash panels, ood trimmed knobs for the dashboard and window cranks and a fancy shifter.
The paint is largely original. There are some dents, ings and a few rust bubbles, ut the sheetmetal is solid. I feel like it gives the car some great character and since the patina look is prettypopularright now,I just had it professionally polished and it looks great! I also replaced the fender beading and the seals for the windshield, uarter windows and back window. I also put in a new windshield. The previous owner had replaced one of the floorpans as well as making repairs to the rocker panels. It looks the work was done to a good standard, o i've left them alone.
The interior was in pretty sad shape when I bought it, o I installed new door panels, eadliner, arpet and sun visors, s well as reupholstering the front and rear seats. The dash only has couple cracks, o I left it alone. The front and rear seatbelts are still intact as well as the original AM/FM radio, which works pretty well too. The last thing I put inside the car was a set of new EMPI logofloor matsto spice it up a little.Itook great care to make sure all of the lights and wipers work since I planned on it being a regular driver and not a garage queen.
The previous ownerhad lowered the car up front with a 2" narrowed adjustable beam which I left in place. I added 2.5" lowering spindles with disc brakes and gave it a one spline drop out back. I also replaced the brake hoses, ear wheel cylinders, hoes master cylinder too. The shocks are the ones that came on it and it seems to ride pretty well fop a lowered bug. When I bought it, here was no engine so installed a 1600 Dual port that I had rebuilt a few years ago and previously had installed in a Karmann Ghia. I recently gave it acompletetune up and valve adjust as well asinstallinga newcarburetorand Bosch 009 distributor. It runs like a champ and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the country. I would estimate the mileage on the engine to be around 20k.
I have taken great care to preserve the originality of the car while at the same time making it into a fun, afe, eliable driver. It goes down the road really well and with the new interior, t's very comfortable too. With that said the body is not perfect and shows its age being a 42 year old car. There are scratches and dents, ut don't judge this book by its cover.Every time I take it out, get tons of compliments onit. I've enjoyed having it but another project has come up so I'm going to let it go. Don't miss the opportunity to by this car and be the hit of every car cruise and VW show you attend or just have a ball cruising it around like I have.
