1975 Triumph TR6 CF35240
While we are in the business of restoring British sports cars, clients occasionally ask us to list their cars on Ebay for them. We only agree to do so under certain circumstances and this sale is one of those. Our client, who just retired, is offering his much loved TR6 for sale due to medical reasons. If not for these circumstances the car would not be available for sale at any price.
CF35240’s odometer has clicked off a mere 45,552 miles since delivery in Little Rock, Arkansas back on 30, April 1975. The car has receipts showing registration for most years since new. The 2.5L in-line six engine is original to the car.The mileage is verified in an extensive service/document file that will be provided to the lucky winning bidder. This file includes (as pictured) the original order form from Continental Cars Inc. of Little Rock, Arkansas, along with the original window sticker, sales invoice, receipts and service/handbook. In addition, there is a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certified copy of the factory record of CF35240’s construction, clear title and current registration. Also included are the contents of the owners Triumph document collection, Triumph library, memorabilia and parts (There will be a list presented later in the auction detailing the books and authors).
CF35240 was housed and serviced in Little Rock from new until August of 1983. The car’s second caretaker lived in Texarkana, Texas. Our man in Texas owned and cared for the car for 20 years, then sold the car through a dealer to a gentleman in Kansas City, Missouri in May of 2003. Registration receipts indicate the owner moved himself and CF35240 to Warner Robbins, Georgia in May of 2005. The current owner purchased the car 25 June, 2009 with 38,000 miles on the clock and is the car’s fourth caretaker. His dedication to preserving CF35240 and its history echoes that of the previous three owners. As evidenced in the binders containing copious receipts and records, this car has always been well loved and looked after.
During the current owner’s tenure, he has maintained the car with an open checkbook and made several well thought out improvements designed to improve its reliability while preserving the rest of the car and its natural British feel. Speedwell was enlisted for this purpose. As you will discover, the car’s owner was successful in his end goal of having a TR6 that is as reliable as it is beautiful. These improvements, performed in November of 2009, included a new Robbins convertible top, refinishing of the original dashboard fascia (had started to peel slightly), all gauges were taken apart, cleaned and re-sealed, installation of an AMCO center console accommodating a Smith’s electric clock, new Motolita wooden steering wheel (original wheel comes with car) and driving lamps. The factory exhaust manifold was sent to Jet-Hot for ceramic coating and, while it was off, the engine was thoroughly cleaned and repainted. The original oil filter canister was replaced with a modern spin on type as these do a better job of filtering and are much easier to change. A new fuel pump was installed. Also, a new alloy valve cover was fitted strictly for appearance sake (the original also comes with the car). The fuel tank was removed, boiled out and sealed with an ethanol proof sealer. The engine’s front timing cover was removed to facilitate replacement of a leaking front seal so, while it was off, the timing chain and tensioner were replaced with a higher quality German made version. Few people realize that Triumph recommended changing the timing chain every 30,000 miles. While the radiator was out for the timing cover seal replacement, the radiator was sent out to be hot-tanked and flow checked. It passed with flying colors and was re-installed. Steering rack boots had started to crack and were replaced with new. The plastic accelerator cross-shaft bushings were replaced with better designed permanent bushings. The differential was removed to facilitate the re-enforcement of the right front differential frame mount (this is accomplished by boxing in the sides of the mount with steel gussets), making this common TR6 design flaw a non-issue. The differential was treated to new seals, rear cover gasket and new mounts, then re-installed. All the flexible brake hoses were replaced as were the rear wheel cylinders. The car has also been fitted with Z-rated Pirelli P4000 Super Touring tires which greatly improve steering response. Lastly, the headlights were changed to much better Hella H4s and further enhanced through installation of relays to handle power. This takes the load off the switch so one never has to worry about a lighting meltdown or ever having to replace the headlamp switch.
12 January, 2011 saw the installation of a freshly re-manufacturedOE J-Type Overdrive gearbox from Quantum Mechanics of Oxford, Connecticut. During this installation another TR6 design weakness was rectified with the re-enforcement of the clutch actuating fork on its shaft. Historically, TR6s have an issue with the shear pin shearing, allowing the actuating arm to spin on the shaft causing the clutch to not work. To effectively cure this a new cross-shaft and actuating fork were installed, fitted with a new shear pin, and then further re-enforced with a ¼ roll pin. Naturally, CF35240 was also treated to a new clutch assembly and the flywheel was re-surfaced.
23 June, 2011 saw the sympathetic conversion of the fuel system to new dual SU HS6 side draft carburetors, replacing the problematic Zenith Stromberg pollution control carburetors. Triumphs used to have SU carburetors before the geniuses in our Federal government decided they needed to ruin performance by restricting emissions. The SUs are a much simpler design, more easily serviceable and free of the troubles associated with the Zeniths. The SUs were then fitted with K&N air cleaner assemblies. The distributor was sent to the competent wizard of ignition (Jeff Schlemmer) at Advanced Distributors for a rebuild, then reinstalled.
Ready for the road?
Absolutely!
The oil has been changed annually and any needed maintenance discovered during these visits were attended to faithfully. This car is in excellent health and is ready to be driven anywhere you want to go. Just pull out the choke, turn the key and the engine eagerly starts. Let it warm for a few moments, push the choke in and the engine settles into a lovely cadenced idle. All the gauges work as they should as does the heater and wipers. The air conditioning is nice and cold. All the gauge illumination works as does the rest of the lighting, turn signals, etc. The wiring is orderly and original. The only additional wiring is that of the relays under the bonnet associated with the headlamps and driving lamps. As seen in the pictures, the oil pressure at idle is a very respectable 30 PSI with the engine fully warmed up. At 3000 RPM the oil pressure climbs to 75 PSI. The car drives very smoothly and makes no unusual noises or sounds, just the nice mellow note of the exhaust system. The clutch engages exactly as it should. The gearbox upshifts and downshifts easily in all gears and the overdrive engages and disengages exactly as it should. Steering response is excellent and cornering is flat. The engine has plenty of power and acceleration is brisk. The front disc and rear drum brakes haul the car down from speed evenly and without fuss. The radio is a Pyle retro stereo than enables the use of a smart phone or iPod. The convertible top has a zip-out rear window that allows top down like driving on those hot summer days without the sun beating down directly on you. The exhaust doesn’t smoke at all and there are no errant smells of gasoline or exhaust that so often accompany a classic sports car.

[isdntekvideo]We highly recommend a test drive and/or independent inspection as the car will not disappoint. The Mimosa paint is very presentable and mostly original, with some areas having been resprayed over the years due to minor garage mishaps over CF35240’s long history. An example would be that last year the bonnet was resprayed because the owner had let a wall stored bicycle escape his grasp, land on the bonnet and scratch it right in the middle. The body shows zero signs of ever having been involved in any kind of traffic accident. In the pictures you will find the few minor paint flaws, including two dings on the left front wing (can likely be removed by good ding repair tech), a touched up chip at the top of the left front wing and two touched up chips on the boot. Also, pictured, is a scuffed area under the rear bumper on the right side of the rear valance.
Ebay only allows us 24 pictures but there are 200 more in our drop box file (Go to dropboxdotcom). Just search "1975 Triumph TR6 Georgia Mimosa" If you have any trouble with that, just email us for a link (Ebay will not allow us to link additional pictures anymore)
The interior was gone through by the third owner and, as you can see, is still in very good condition. The seats are comfortable and done in the original Chestnut color. Chestnut carpets match the seats and are also in very good condition. The three point retractable seat belts are less than ten years old and work very well. The only rust the car has ever had is still there in the form of a quarter inch hole in the driver’s floor (see pictures). It has not been repaired as it seems not worth addressing at this point. There is not rust anywhere else in the car, as you will plainly see.
Please look at all the pictures and feel free to email us with any questions you may have. Also, if you would like a picture of any specific area that we may not have addressed, please don’t hesitate to request it.
CF35240 and its current owner have participated in several rallies and events. The car has always been very reliable, never missing a beat. The sale includes a binder with pictures and paperwork detailing these events. One particularly notable adventure was the North American Triumph Association National Convention in Jekyll Island, Georgia in October of 2010. The owner drove his car from their home in Warner Robbins, Georgia to the event (over 200 miles one way), winning third place in the Concours d’Elegance for Modified Touring (among a veritable sea of TR6’s), then drove back home. What really stands out is that most of the entries in the Concours were trailered in, while CF35240 was driven.

*A word about our feedback rating: We have been members of the Ebay community for over 20 years and have ALWAYS had a 100% feedback rating. We take our relationship with this community very seriously. Last year we sold a Toyota Land Cruiser on Ebay for a friend. The winning bidder sent his 25 year old son with a truck and trailer. Though the kid was obviously on drugs I let him load the vehicle up and head out (His father said he was just "high strung"). To make a long story short, the kid damaged the vehicle on the 500 mile trip home and, though I provided pictures of the undamaged vehicle on his trailer prior to depatrure, the kid's father wanted a refund AND for us to come to Texas to retrieve the vehicle. I deemed this as completely unreasonable and politely refused. So, he left us the first bad feedback we have ever had. Ebay does not give the seller a voice in these things, so there it is.We will do everything in our power to make sure this transaction goes smoothly and that we are very communicative. We do count our lucky stars that we have only had to deal with one lunatic customer in the 20+ years we have associated with Ebay :-)
On Apr-09-18 at 05:54:41 PDT, seller added the following information:The title and the VIN plate for this TR6 state CF35240U as the VIN and are correct. In the auction, we refer to the car as CF35240 as the "U" merely designates it as a North American Market car. We had one gentleman ask about this so there you go.
