One of the most iconic British sports car manufacturers of the 1960s, Triumph was well known for their open top sports cars, in particular the TR series. The TR4 is one of the most well-known iterations of the series.Beginning here with a 1963 TR4, this car has evolved over the last 20 years into the beast we have here.
This car was purchased about 20 years ago with the plan to put a V8 in it from day one.A suitable car was found that was in great condition, so as to minimize the amount of work necessary for the conversion. The initial conversion work was done, but then the car was driven and upgraded over the coming years…
The fastidious owner, an engineer by trade, built the car largely by himself, and as things broke, he re-engineered it to replace with better and stronger parts. The power increased, more things found a breaking point, and over the course of 105,000 miles (yes, not kidding), the car has arrived to the current state. Fully sorted and in the third full evolution of the engine and running gear, this car is ready for anything from road trips to track time if desired.
Chassis/Body– Custom 2”x3” boxed tubing with “X” member and structural reinforcements.Modified MGB front cross member, and triangulated tubular structural work for cowl stiffness.Six point roll cage welded to frame.Body modifications include steel fender flares, firewall, transmission tunnel, hood louvers, stainless steel battery box, aluminum belly pans, adjustable aluminum rear spoiler. 20 gallon aluminum fuel cell in trunk. Front and rear spoilers added and evolved to create balanced positive downforce. Currently at a 46/54 weight distribution. Body is painted in PPG Viper Red, base plus clear.
Engine– 6.6L Chevrolet LS2 block, 10 quart dry sump lubrication, forged crankshaft, forged H beam rods, forged pistons, modified ECU, modified injectors, LS6 intake, LS6 hydraulic roller camshaft, external oil cooler, 4 row cross flow radiator, Sanderson ceramic coated headers with 2.5” collector and mandrel bent pipes and mufflers.480hp at 6000RPM and 515 ft. lbs at 4500RPM.
Drivetrain- Tremec TKO 600 5 speed transmission with .80 5th gear, and remote transmission cooler.Centerforce clutch with steel flywheel.Chrysler 8 ¾” housing, Moser axles, 3.55:1 gears, Torsen style positraction. Gear ratio limited to 160mph.
Brakes– Wilwood 13” vented and grooved rotors with 6 pot calipers front, and 12.2” vented rotors with 4 pot calipers rear, TR-6 pedal assembly actuating dual Tilton master cylinders with adjustable bias, and stainless lines.
Wheels/Tires– 18”x8.5” Ruff Racing aluminum wheels, with 245/35-18 tires up front, and 255/35-18 tires out back.
Suspension– Up front, Hoyle Engineering (modified) upper and lower A arms, GAZ adjustable coilovers, splined sway bar on ball bearings with adjustable ends.In the rear, Chrysler 8 ¾” live axle with 4 locating arms with adjustable rod ends, Watts linkage with adjustable rod ends, adjustable coilovers, and sway bar on ball bearings with adjustable ends.
The current engine, clutch, and transmission have less than 5K miles on them, while the odometer shows a total of 105K (since the initial conversion work). The interior features Recaro seats, Autometer gauges, Vintage Air heater, and Sparco 5 point harnesses. Paint was recently refreshed in the last few years, and presents quite well in person. The hard top is bolted in place, but can be removed as desired in less than 10 minutes. With the top off, the roll bar remains in place (not connected to the hard top).
This highly evolved Triumph TR4 is not for everyone - track or street, it can do both if you like. It requires brass balls to drive at the limit, yet the reward is a smile you cannot wipe off your face after driving it. The Triumph is offered on a clean and clear WA title.
