The Triumph TR was a long line of classic British sports cars made between 1953 and 1981 by Triumph Motor Companyin the United Kingdom. Among its many incarnations, the TR4,code named "Zest" during development, evolved from the TR3 with a more powerful 2138cc engine, synchromesh transmission and rack & pinion steering. Beingthe first body designed by Giovanni Michelottithe TR4struck a unique balance between beauty and practicality.
With its wide body lines and elegant design cues, the hallmark of the most prolific sports car designer of the 20th century, TR4 far outshines its homelier successors, the TR6-8 and is exceedingly more practical than its TR2-3 predecessors.
In addition, the larger trunk, easy-to-operate, weather-tight folding top and good heating system makes the TR4 a very versatile sports car; and can be used year-round as a daily driver. It's not a mean-spirited diva, but an un-temperamental, ruggedly powerful automobile that will put a smile on your face every time you drive it.
In 1966-’67, the TR4A became the final evolution of the TR4.
If ordered with the IRS upgrade, the car came with a whole new chassis and more complex, Independent Rear Suspension for a more comfortable riding sports car. This version has an "IRS" badge on the rear. The new suspension eventually proved itself with the buying public and in racing, with three TR4A IRS models posting a team win and finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in class at the Sebring 12-hour race of 1966.
Today, a Triumph TR4A equipped with IRS and overdrive is considered THE most collectable of all the TR Series.
Here's such a superb specimen for your consideration!
The wonderful 1967 TR4A IRS Roadster presented here VIN *CTC-70508-L* left the factory gates in Coventry England on July 11, 1966 and sold new at Standard Triumph Motor Company, Inc. in Los Angeles, California.
Spending its whole life on the West Coast (for the last 30 years in total hibernation) the car recently emerged from acomprehensiverestoration which began by the previous owner and was completed with the assistance of Walter Kelly of Britalia (SCTOA’s “Triumph Guru of the West”) in its original and rare, Royal Blue color with Black leather interior.
Included with the car is a treasuretrove of documents including service and restoration receipts, parts catalogs, the original Owner’s Handbook, vintage magazine articles, 3-owner sale records, even a signed, certified copy of the factory record from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust; all testimony to its rich, Southern California provenance!
The Heritage Certificate verifies this to be agenuine IRS withits correct, original color scheme and heater from the factory.
Proudly displaying its irreplaceable, original 1967-issue, 6-digit, black-and-gold California license plates, front and back, this cherished TR4A is a certified, CA native that has certainly lived a charmed life.
Let's inspect this exceptional Triumph now in more detail, top to bottom, inside and out.
Exterior:
Surveying the car's straight, smooth, and 100% rust free coachwork, we marvel at the mirror finish of the 2-stage, clear-coated Royal Blue(code #56) paintwork.
Color-sanded and buffed to a Concourse quality, panels are laser straight and the finish looks so deep you could dive into it.
Body gaps between hoods, doors, and fenders are of reference quality; there are only a few miniscule blems, chips and scratches – none of which would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights.
Notably among the many design cues and refinements by Giovanni Michelotti; to bring the overall body line to a lower level, he added an asymmetric “bonnet bulge” to clear the carburetors. Genius!
Close-up of the, upper-front light assembly is exclusive to the TR4A.
Restored to this level, they resemble fine jewelry; true automotive art indeed.
All bumpers, trim and brightwork were fully disassembled and triple-plated in sparkling new chrome.
This splendid Californian turns heads everywhere and could proudly be exhibited at the most prestigious British Car Shows.
Brand new Vredestein Sprint Classic radials of the correct vintage, size 165HR15, look spectacular and lend the car that incomparable British charisma.
With optional 48-Spoke 15” X 4” wires, freshly powder-coated in matte silver with chrome spinners, wheel detail is amazing and certainly the most appreciated option today on almost any period sports car.
Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how sparkling the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 5-year old, not a 50-year old car.
This one is that clean!
While we’re down on one knee, let’s take a close look underneath.
Magnificent undercarriage presents itself in an absolutely rust free state which speaks volumes about the car's Southern California provenance.
A full Major Suspension Kit was installed including all new bushings, ball joints tie rods andshocks.
All new flex lineswere replaced for brakes and fuelintake.
Brand new, hi-torque, gear reduction starter seen here.
Reflecting on the fact that this British gem is 50 years old, we dare to pose the question: can it get any better, any healthier, any cleaner…
…or any more original than this (unless you kept a car in a vacuum-sealed bubble, perhaps)?
We'll inspect the interior next, shall we?
The TR4A’s luxuriously outfitted cockpit is a world apart from the austerity of a TR3 or early TR4, keeping more in line with a Jaguar or Jensen.
Triumph's black bucket seats with white piping are beautifully reupholstered in supple leather (top, sides & back) with new padding to restore the firm feel of the buckets.
New seatbelts feature “Triumph” badged chrome buckles.
From plush, new carpet and panels to the white sun visors, all upholstery, trim and seals in this stunning interior are brand new using only British Motor Heritage approved parts and materials.
A true British Roadster must have a wooden dashboard, and the TR4A is no exception.
Brand new wood facia was hand cut and finished by Master woodworker and vintage British enthusiast Gary Cimino of C&G Woodcraft.
Looking at the fascinating array of beautifully preserved JAEGER gauges with excellent silk screening of the instrument dials and surrounded by exquisite, hand-finished and polished wood, one is transported back in time.
The tactile pleasures are markedly increased by the knowledge that everything actually works…
All new dash pads (upper & lower) were installed including the padded cover on the lower support which houses the dealer-installed, period-correct, working AM radio.
Close-up shows factory-installed banjo steering wheel to be nicely refinished, free from cracks and in amazingly well preserved condition. And yes, the horn works!
Column-mounted levered switches operate overdrive and turn signals on the left (both new) and headlights on the right.
Everything replaced inside this inviting interior is factory correct.
The freshly restored top frame was fitted with a brand new, black Robbinstop.
Everything fits tight as a drum with no leaks or wind noises.
The original, full Tonneau cover with a zipper down the middle remains excellently preserved and Cover is very practical; permitting you to leave the TR's top down when parking it, yet protecting the interior from unfavorable weather and all-too-curious passers-by. When you are about to go cruising by yourself, you just unzip the driver's side. Makes for a draft-free drive, and--if needed--the heater works much better, too!
Tonneau can also cover just the lowered top section.
Remember, this is an old-school British roadster: the top is only to be closed in an absolute emergency, i.e., in a hurricane or when fully submerged!
Let's quickly check out the trunk.
As you'd expect by now, the trunk is surprisingly large and very clean.
Matching wire spare with new Vredestein Sprint Classic 165HR15 resides in a separate compartment below a wooden partition.
Be assured, you'll find zero corrosion in this critical area as well.
Now let’s have a peek under the bonnet:
Engine and Mechanical:
Engine compartment is as clean as the TR's exterior.
The TR4 is powered by a rock-solid, 2138cc pushrod engine that has earned its reputation of being unbreakable.
With a fresh 87mm piston & liner kit, bearings and complete valve job, the 4-cylinder power plant sounds crisp and runs smoothly, like a turbine, with superb oil pressure, cold or hot.
The4-speed transmission withnew clutch and upgraded Laycock-de-Normanville A-Type Overdrive, makes hisisbest drivetrain fora TR4A.
Photo above shows all new plugs, ignition wires, fuel pump, battery, brake and clutch master cylinders and rebuilt wiper motor.
Photo above shows rebuilt radiator, all new hoses and 2 horns.
It may come as a revelation to many, but all you ever need to keep this strong 4-banger going is a screw-driver, a hammer, a set of pliers, and maybe a little wire.
For anybody who's paying his own bills, it surely provides peace of mind to know there are no black boxes, injectors, electronics, and fancy stuff like that.
The TR4 is a minimalist car designed to deliver maximum fun!
Photo above shows rebuilt dual SU HS6 carburetors.
Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic and there are no major oil leaks.
Yes, when properly restored and maintained, any TR4 can be a very tough and reliable automobile!
Drivability:
Invigorating is the word that best describes this TR4 experience.
This Roadster begs to be driven!
Set the choke, turn the key and the motor comes to life almost instantly. With sport mufflers, a healthy exhaust note alerts the senses. S
elect first gear, release the clutch, and off you go.
Though 50 years old, this TR4A still maneuvers comfortably in today's bustling traffic.
The wind-in-the-hair fun quotient is tremendous, to say the least! Dogs bark, kids point, and girls swoon wherever you go, and a brisk drive in the Roadster is not only a feast for all senses, but also instant relaxation for the mind. You feel what you drive. It's almost as if you are a part of the machine.
In any climate, the powerful 4-cylinder engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly through the gears without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror.
Warmed up, the oil pressure ranges from about 55 lbs. at idle to a reassuring 70 lbs. at speed. Coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds.
Throwing this TR through the curves, the strong engine emanates throaty, lusty sounds. The fully synchronized, 4-speed transmission with a fresh clutch shifts very smooth, precise and the electric overdrive slips the car into a nice, final drive which allows for long distance, engine relaxing, highway cruising. The fresh disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading.
In fact, this TR’s steering makes a mockery of the rubberized, over-assisted control mechanisms that pass for most modern cars' guidance systems. The chassis inspires with its unsophisticated charm; its transparency is convincing.
Aided by newer suspension and radial tires, handling and braking are simple and superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Triumph is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive!
Everything works on this TR, from the lights and switches to the heater fan.
Despite its age, the car definitely is ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live.
Pound for pound, the TR4 is one of the finest, most fun post-war British sports cars. Being a highly collectible Classic with fantastic appreciation potential, this one can easily serve as a reliable daily driver. To make things even better, reasonably priced spares and affordable, classic car insurance are readily available.
Looking back, you realize that, somewhere in time, the chapter of the true British Roadster has ended. It has ended with the introduction of engine management systems; it has ended with the worldwide popularity of power steering, power windows, power tops, and power-assisted thinking, even in Her Majesty's Kingdom. It has ended with the Triumph.
This Triumph TR4A IRS however is up to any task imaginable. It could serve as a show car, a "new" old car to relive the good old days, or simply as a reliable, fun daily driver during ANY time of the year. At the very least, no matter where you go, you’ll see a smile on everyone’s face, including your own. To state it succinctly: It delivers on its promise!
To make things even better, the car is smog exempt in California.
There's but one stumbling block on the way to TR4 heaven: pristine examples are getting very hard to find. All the more reason to watch this one closely; it's one of the last true rust free California "Overdrive" TR4As in captivity!
