1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60
4.2L Inline 6-cylinder4-speed transmission
Beige (paint code 464) with tan interior
I purchased this FJ60 from the second owner, who like me, is a long-time resident of Raleigh. He drove the car daily, and when he retired in 2008, he treated himself to a new vehicle with the intention of restoring the FJ "one of these days...." Fast-forward 10 years, and one of these days never arrived. That's when he gave up on that idea (with a little prompting from his wife), and I purchased the car.
As it had sat for a decade, I towed it to my mechanic to do a light mechanical refresh on it, so the vehicle would be road-worthy. My mechanic finished up a while later, and performed the following:
New custom-made battery cablesNew batteryNew alternatorRebuilt carburetorNew brake, power steering, transmission, and transfer case fluidsNew spark plugs and wiresNew distributor cap, points, and coilNew radiator coolant and hosesNew front and rear brakes, including replacing the drum brake hardwareNew shock absorbers front and rear, along with the steering damperNew air and fuel filtersNew muffler/tailpipeDealer installed a new OEM choke cable
There are two recalls associated with FJ60s: gas tank and rear seat belts. The gas tank recall was performed by Toyota in 1994, and the seat belt recall was performed by Toyota in 2019.
This FJ60 runs very strong, and fires right up. Amazingly, it still has all of the original Toyota glass, and comes with the factory Toyota tool kit, still in the original bag. It also has the original owner's manual, and a handful of records from the second owner. The AM-FM radio still works!
There is a minor amount of rust on the lower quarters. The paint that is on the vehicle is the original paint, and in some places, it is excellent. I cleaned the paint by hand, removing a lot of the "spray paint/touch-up paint" that the original owner, for some mysterious reason, had applied. The undercarriage has some scaling, but no heavy rust. There is ZERO rust on the roof or around the windows.
All turn signals/brake lights/headlights/high beams work, as do the wipers and horn. The windows are crank-style, and all roll up and down without binding. The dash pad is original, and is in excellent shape for the year. The gauges all work, though the gas gauge can be a bit quirky.
As NC is an emissions-testing state, this vehicle was tested annually until 2008. All original smog equipment is still in place.
The clean NC title is in my name, so please have your finances together should you decide to purchase. Pre-purchase inspections are welcome. I will be glad to work with the buyer regarding the timeline for shipping. The vehicle is currently in my garage, though I am driving it at least every other day. It's a great vehicle to drive, as you get a lot of attention at lights and gas stations. You don't see a lot of the single-headlight FJ's on the road much these days.
If you need any additional pictures, please let me know.
Cons:Valve cover gasket is leakingPower steering pump is noisy, but works. It's a bit tight at very low speeds, but maybe that's the way they all areA/C blows, but there is a freon leak, as it is no longer cold
