I'm reluctantly selling my 1977 FJ40 to make room for a new family member. I've owned this Landcruiser for over 10 years and it has been garage kept the entire time. I've only taken it off-road a couple of times (it did very well). It drives great and most everything works. The cell phone pictures don't do it justice. Rebuilt Salvage title (Texas) when I bought it (sorry, can't tell you why it was salvaged).I had no problems registering and insuring this vehicle in Texas, ut never had it registered in NC only because I wasn't driving it much and didn't want to pay the yearly tax. Titling and registering it shouldn't be a problem.
Original 4.2L straight six engine (66k miles)
Original 4-speed manual transmission
Aftermarket carburetor, ut have an original Toyota one that works but it didn't pass my shop's leak-down test (FJ is also de-smogged)
Front disc brakes / rear drum
4WD high and low work well
Starts and idles smoothly
Electronic ignition (i.e., o points distributor) and aftermarket electric fuel pump
Installed battery cut-off switch with key and float charger connection under front right fender (see pic). This is primarily for security reasons and I only need to put in on the charger over the winter (battery is good).
Aftermarket pro-comp lift kit and wheels with 31" tires
Blacked out trim: Wiper motor cover, as cover, nd kick vents are plastidipped so can be returned to chrome (not my preference). Front bezel and hood hardware were powder-coated.
Power-steering: Previous owner did this "upgrade". It's not great and could use a new box and pitman arm at some point but it functions safely and drives straight.
CD stereo with aux input under the dash
Aftermarket steering wheel (I have the big original one, ust didn't make much sense with the power steering)
Aftermarket headers and exhaust
Original front seats (some tears particularly in passenger side). Some holes/tears in the jump seats but look pretty good.
Aftermarket 3-point retractable seat belts in the front. Lap belts for the jump seats
Bed-liner and under-coating sprayed by previous owner has protected the sheet metal pretty well. I've wire brushed, ust proofed and touched it up where it has peeled away.
Minor surface rust on frame and some parts, ut overall the sheet metal and chassis are in great shape. It does look like the previous owner may have welded in part of the driver's side floor pan at some point but the repair is in good shape and covered by the floor mat.
Front knuckles do leak some and should be rebuilt at some point but does not affect driveability.
I notice an occasional small oil leak after a long drive centered under the truck (I put some cardboard there to protect my garage floor), ut not sure if it's from the oil pan or transfer case.
Paint is definitely not original but looks pretty good and shiny in most spots. There's one spot on front left fender from where I left a magnetic bowl and minor scratches and touch-up paint elsewhere.
There is no hard top and the soft top I have is in terrible shape with tears on both sides between the door and the roll bar (see pics).I'm pretty sure the hardware is all there. I've only had the soft top on once. The top might be repairable but I would probably just get a new one if you need it and want it to look good. I didn't as I never rode it in the winter and normally just had the bikini top on with the doors off.
Doors have new panels but some rust/bondo at the bottom (pretty typical for FJs). Again, only put the doors on for the pictures (normally off).
All gauges and lights function except seat belt light. All knobs function as far as I know except fan only goes on high power (choke, iper and washer are all I've really ever used).
The end of the turn signal stalk is broken but does not affect function.
The rear tailgate is aftermarket and was just bolted on by previous owner (i.e., oes not open).
No NC inspection necessary for 35+ year old vehicles.
I'll add any more details/issues as I can think of them. Overall, his FJ is very clean and runs well. If you're looking for a great looking, lean FJ40 but don't want to pay the $15-25k+ for a restored one that you're afraid to take off road, his is the perfect vehicle.
