Car description |
---|
Rare, rust-free 1987 Subaru GL 4x4 station wagon from Phoenix, Ariz.. Get ready for winter! This car really handles well on snow-covered roads, and it's one of the few of its type left. I'm the second owner.
This CLASSIC '80s wagon is in mint condition: 1.8-liter EA82 "boxer" 4-cylinder engine; 5-speed manual transmission; dual-range shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive; 170,000 original miles; ZERO rust; body and interior are in fantastic shape -- shiny paint. Very well maintained; lots of new and new-ish parts. I would not hesitate to drive this car across the country (I've done so three times already, and drive it between Hartford and D.C. on a regular basis).
I really, really, really hate to sell this car, but my wife wants a larger, more modern family car. So here are the particulars...
-MECHANICAL-
--New Parts--
- ball joints
- front brake rotors, calipers, brake hoses, pads, hardware
- front struts
- front wheel bearings re-packed with grease
- five new all-season tires (new, full-sized spare included)
- brake master cylinder
--New-ish Parts (replaced within the last year or two)
- rear brake shoes/wheel cylinders
- rear struts
- outer tie rod ends
- pwr steering rack boots
- new Weber 32/36 DGEV carburetor (manual choke, for reliability)
- exhaust pipe/glasspack muffler (not loud; tasteful Subaru rumble)
- timing belts/tensioners
- crank/camshaft/oil pump seals
- thermostat
- radiator/water pump/all coolant hoses
- valve cover gaskets
-BODY/INTERIOR-
I bought this car in Phoenix, Arizona in the spring of 2014, and have applied Carwell CP-90 rust inhibitor to the undercarriage and inside the doors and rocker panels every year since I've owned it. I'm very diligent about washing and waxing the car, especially about flushing the undercarriage and crevices with fresh water on a regular basis.
The interior is immaculate. The seats, carpeting and dash are in excellent condition. The only wear/damage is on top of the front door panels --where the sun damaged the vinyl and it cracked away (I bought a sheet of replacement vinyl, but haven't had a chance to do anything with it) -- and in the trunk, where there are some light stains on the carpet.
The stock radio, which I kept, stopped working, so I replaced it with a new Kenwood unit that features bluetooth, MP3, USB and 1/8" auxiliary input jacks, and all the other modern goodies (it does not, however, come with a CD player).
-PROBLEMS-
This car runs great, but like any 30-year-old car, it has some minor cosmetic blemishes. The paint is in good shape, but there are some small chips and scratches. The interior is beautiful, but there are a few small stains on the carpet, and the tops of the front door panels have some sun damage (the vinyl cracked and flaked away). The engine and transmission leak a tiny bit of oil, but not enough to affect operation or leave stains on the ground. The air conditioning system, which has been converted to R-134a, has a leak somewhere and needs a recharge.
-EXTRAS-
This is the second third generation Subaru GL I've owned, so I have a LOT of extra parts for it. Here's a list:
- 4 good snow tires, mounted on clean steel rims
- full set of factory service manuals (six volumes)
- DL quad headlights
- an assortment of extra interior switches and electronic items
- extra trim pieces
- a full set of extra rear brake parts, wheel bearings, etc.
- new accelerator cable
- 2 extra Hitachi (original-style) carburetors
- extra a/c compressor
- extra power steering pump/reservoir
- extra belts/hoses
- Weber carb jet kit (in case you need to adjust the jetting for higher altitude)
**- EJ22 engine with new Subaru gaskets and EA82 conversion kit, new 2-row radiator and all other parts needed for 2.2L swap (This will cost extra. I'm asking $1,200 for the setup on Craigslist, but this is negotiable if you're interested in purchasing these parts with the car.)
This is a great car, and has been taken care of. If you're into classic Subarus and you want one that's in good shape, this is the car for you! If no one wants it, I'll simply tell my wife, "Well honey, no one wanted it!" and continue enjoying it. :)
