Car description |
---|
This 1963 Studebaker Avanti was sold new in Rancho Santa Fe, California, to a Mr. R.B. Mann. He owned it until 1971, when he gave it to his daughter, who kept it until 2008. The extensive delivery documentation, receipts, DMV registration documents and Studebaker National Museum build invoice show an impeccable and traceable provenance for this car. . This car is extremely original, with mostly original paint, matching numbers engine, original interior ( with minor and accurate seat bolster repair ) original Black California license plate, and original and excellent dashboard. . The next owner in 2008 purchased this car from the original family, and he embarked on a campaign of significant mechanical restoration and improvement so the car could be driven reliably. . Here's the Avanti Owner Service Policy card for R.B. Mann, the original owner! . . In 2008, the next owner, an auto shop technical instructor, took the engine out and re-sealed the front and rear main seals, he cleaned out the freeze plugs and water passages so it would cool properly, and changed the cylinder head gaskets. Substantial work was done on the front suspension, and the brakes were completely gone through. The tires were also replaced. Many of these receipts are included with the car. . The result of all this work is a car that can be driven comfortably and confidently on a 90 mile round trip to the San Marino Concours d'Elegance, where it was shown in the post-war preservation class. It's happy on the freeway, and it's happy in stop & go traffic. It's a pleasure to drive! Let's view the car in operation! . The front view is stunning . Great Avanti Styling . Great Avanti profile, and excellent door and panel fit. . Nice! . Here's the reproduction invoice - from Studebaker to the dealer, Bob Francisco in Rancho Santa Fe, C, showing the car as it was delivered. I'm sure the 4.09 rear axle ratio has been replaced with something more civilized for road use. Note the "Silent Muffler" option. You could have your choice of Glasspack style mufflers, which were a bit on the rumbly side, or "Silent Mufflers" which were more traditional mufflers. Also note the Engine number, 1904, which we'll see on the engine below. . There was some paint and body repair done on the rear of the car, you can tell the paint shade and other clues. . Obvious spot-in and repair. But with an original car like this, you know what your're buying. . A great view. . There's the original engine number, R1904 . Here's a look at the gorgeous original interior! . Amazingly nice! . Terrific! And original! . The interior is original, including the salt & pepper carpeting, although we replaced the upper seat bolsters with carefully sourced material that's a dead ringer for original. . Beautiful dashboard and steering wheel. . We think it has 105,000 miles. . Excellent gauges and bezels. bright indicator needles. All instruments work except for the clock. . Excellent original headliner. . Excellent original glovebox, liner, and plastic Avanti delivery folio. . And of course the original mirror and tray, with original maroon liner. . Nice! . 289 Studebaker R-1 V-8, with Carter AFB four barrel carburetor. Runs GREAT! . Nice. Note the original and complete ignition shielding. Also note the updated dual-reservoir master cylinder. . Stock & authentic. . Unusually, this car came equipped with manual steering. You get some extra road feel when you drive it! . Here's the trunk . And spare & jacking instructions. No jack or lugwrench, though. . The selling dealer, Bob Francisco's license plate frame!
.
The chrome rear bumperguards are both in need of either replacement or repair. . Many Old registrations to the daughter of R.B. Mann and her husband . Change of registration slips for 1971 for R.B. Mann, the original owner. . Those documents were in the steering column registration holder, a very old-school California DMV regulation - back when the car was new, you were supposed to have your registration clearly visible on the steering column so the police could see it quickly. . They must have travelled all over, there are all kinds of maps that go with the car. . Nice and dry underneath. I'll never guarantee no leaks, but this car is pretty dry for a Studebaker! . Recent tailpipes. . Super solid frame & hog-troughs . Same on the driver's side. . Solid as a California car should be! . Front suspension. . A great car! Leave as it is for Preservation class, or re-paint and re-plate it to take it to the next level !
