Car description |
---|
This is 1 of 224 Shelby Hertz Mustangs produced in 1968. In 1965 Hertz purchased 562 Shelby GT350 Mustangs for its rental fleet. All of those cars were black and gold. Little known is that Hertz brought the program back in 1968 when they ordered 224 Shelby GT350 Mustangs. Unlike 1965, the 1968 rental cars came in different colors. All of them were highly optioned and given that there were only 224 produced they are actually more rare than the iconic black and gold Hertz cars of 1965.
This car came from the factory with air conditioning (a very rare option on any 60s Mustang), tilt away steering wheel (also very rare, the steering wheel moves out of the way when engine is shut off and door opened), clock, power steering, automatic transmission, power front disc brakes, fog lights, racing 4 point shoulder harnesses, fold down rear seat, and tinted windows. In addition the 1968 Hertz cars came with all of the Shelby modifications, including 4 barrel carburetor, 8K Tach, Oil Pressure and Amp gauge cluster, Roll bar, more aggressive body panels, sequential taillights, special shock absorbers, grill mounted fog lights, Shelby badging, Shelby unique ID, Goodyear GT350 Speedway tires, and more.
This car has been fully restored on a rotisserie. It has the original engine and original transmission, both of which have been rebuilt less than 200 miles ago. The engine compartment has been fully detailed to Mustang Club of America standards as has the undercarriage. The seat coverings are original and in great shape. The glass is all date coded to match the car. Where ever possible NOS parts were used during the restoration. This includes many suspension components. The air cleaner has been signed by the man himself, Carroll Shelby.
Hertz cars originally came with steel wheels and hubcaps but this car was upgraded to NOS Shelby 10 spoke wheels (came out of Ford boxes dated 1968) during the restoration. Don't be fooled by other 10 spoke wheels you might see. Original Shelby 10 spokes have slightly tapered spokes which the reproductions lack. The original hubcaps and wheels will also come with the car although they have not been restored. They are however in good shape. The radio was also upgraded from an AM only to an AM/FM but the original AM radio will also come with the car.
This particular car was originally Highland Green (as was, funny enough, the very first car I owned - a 1971 Torino). I never liked green cars so I painted my Torino black and I had this car painted Candyapple Red. There is a small nick on the left fender which I will try to get fixed before sale. I have owned this car since 1986. The original restoration was done in the mid-90s and then freshened up in 2009. It has not been driven since then although it is regularly started and allowed to run for a while. It is stored in a garage with a car cover and a "car jacket" that completely protects the car.
The car was a regular winner at car shows including several best in show awards. I no longer take the car to shows but it was a real head turner when I did. The car is located in Greenwood Village, CO and the buyer would be responsible for pickup or shipping.
I have a Marti report on the car and the original build sheet. Everything on the car works. Please note that I have covered the unique Shelby serial number on the VIN plate to prevent someone from counterfeiting the car. This is recommended by the Shelby American Automobile Club. The car is also listed in the Shelby registry.
Note that I have 100% positive feedback and I've tried to describe the car as accurately as possible. I have owned this car since 1986 and have spare parts that would also be for sale although I will not list them until after the car sells. Some spares include a 1968 date coded muffler, front and rear NOS bumpers, and other items. If you have any questions please fee free to contact me. If you are local to Colorado and would like to see the car in person that can be arranged. I also have a contact in the Mustang and Shelby club that I could probably get to do a pre-inspection. He has owned Shelby and Mustangs for a very long time and used to race a 1965 GT350.
