1966 Shelby Cobra
Delftware or Delft pottery, also known as Delft Blue (Dutch: Delfts blauw), is a general term now used for Dutch tin-glazed earthenware, a form of faience. Most of it is blue and white pottery, and the city of Delft in the Netherlands was the major center of production, but the term covers wares with other colors, and made elsewhere. It is also used for similar pottery that it influenced made in England, but this should be called English delftware to avoid confusion.
For consignment the automotive version with color reminiscence of Dutch Delftware China. With its White and Cobalt color scheme, this car is anything but fragile as it can give you a great kick in your pants and handles like it's on rails. It has a 1965 427ci side oiler for its mill, and the interior is blazing blue. A multiple show winner replica of the Cobra, with many extras.
Exterior
Featuring an Antique and Collectible gel coat body we can see its ultra-magnificent sheen, as it is very thick, with no stress marks or fracture lines. Bathed in White gel coat and added delft brightly Cobalt Blue stripes, it is a stunner. With the look of the classic Cobra with the blue on white, we note very rare stainless side pipes with drilled covers which offer up a very distinctive exhaust note. Nice polished chrome full roll bar, pristine chrome brite-work. CompMotive knockoff style wheels are wrapped by virtually new Goodrich 245/60R15 TA's in front and 295/50R15 TA's on the rear. Flipping the hood will reveal an artwork of airbrush mastery in the form of a poised to bite cobra, and if you look down that is exactly what you are going to get.
Interior
Cobalt Blue vinyl bomber buckets complete with racing harness style belts, sits in a sea of perfect blue carpet. A beautiful Cobalt Blue dash wrapped in padded vinyl, houses a large polished centrally located gauge cluster sporting various gauges and knobs. Also is a custom built in on the hump for a Sony AM/FM/CD player very professionally mounted within. A "T" style B&M shifter is well within reach of the pilot as is a rally style drilled padded GT steering wheel. Cobalt blue vinyl covers the doors complete with a pleated pouch for storage is in both doors. A shout out to the trunk where the delft theme persists in deep blue carpet and all buttoned up back here.
Drivetrain
Directly below the airbrush artwork we see a 427ci SC side oiler V8 circa 1965. This engine has been blueprinted and balanced, and has a steel crank, Lemans connecting rods, Arias pistons and a Crower camshaft with .530i .535e lift and 240i 243e duration. Polished Edelbrock heads, and an Edelbrock intake manifold and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor atop. A 10:1 compression ratio allows for modest output for the engine's overall capability, but doing so provides for great dependability, cool running (also due to a fully enclosed shrouded aluminum radiator and fan setup), and preservation of this rare gem power plant which will eventually be no more examples remaining. Add a hint of blue to the heads, all braided hoses, strap on a Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual tranny with a Lakewood scatter shield and power will get safely thrown rearward to a Ford 9-inch 3.50 gear Traction Loc rear. The transmission and clutch have less than 500 miles clocked on them. See the tires spin. Spin tires spin. Smoke rubber smoke...run run run!
Undercarriage
Box and tube framing with a reinforcing X member which is capped on the main rails with 1x2 inch stitch welded tubular steel, and we now have a very rigid chassis with minimal torque steer and chassis flex. All this in near perfect condition with certainly no surface rust or anything otherwise. Also seen underneath are a remote oil filter, electronic fuel pump, aluminum radiator, and a stainless-steel wrapped fuel tank. Front shocks have Carrera coil overs and rear shocks are adjustable Morrison Racing coil overs. Noted also is a 4-bar adjustable linkage on the rear.
Drive-Ability
What a pleasure! A good stiff ride, plenty of power, and beautiful melodious exhaust tone is worth the price of admission alone. With the addition of power rack and pinion steering getting in and out of tight spaces is a breeze. The Cobalt Blue bomber seats and Simpson racing harnesses hold you tight, while you ride on rails around turns. All the while you are turning plenty of heads and it is due in part to the unique sound. I noticed the excessive heat one usually experiences in one of these cars was absent as I came to find out that the footwells were lined with a space age material to keep everything cool in the foot and leg department.
Like the artists of the original Delft China, this build was meticulously and artistically performed utilizing a 1965 V8 side oiler, perfectly machined and polished, and balanced for ultimate performance. This has been tamed due to the consigner wanting to have lots of reliability, and high-performance engines tend to run hot in traffic, but this isn't the case with this beast. Certainly, highly modifiable on the tuning and suspension a truly beautiful example of the Cobra replica on the high end. Careful! don't drop it...
