Car description |
---|
I don't have a space to store my 67,000 original mile 1987 GTA convertible for the winter because of another project I purchased back in June and I really don't want to store a convertible car outside during the New England winter. My father was a Renault dealer back in the 70's and 80's and I currently own 5 Renaults and only have indoor storage for 3 cars. This car was driven from MA to Carlisle, PA for the Import show in May and and to the largest car show in Canada in Granby, Quebec in July with no issues what so ever.
Body:
The car was sold new in NH and I purchased it about 3 years ago from the 2nd owner. Despite being a New England car, the undercarriage is completely rust free. The only issue with it was that the tail lights leaked and rotted a hole where the spare tire sits. The previous owner had cut it out and welded in a patch panel but it is very flimsy metal and not welded very well. It does the job of holding the original donuts spare in place and I have since re-sealed the tail lights and stopped all water leaks. It has been outside all summer and after many rain storms I have not seen any evidence of water leaks anywhere in the entire car. The car still has the original paint on it and still looks very nice for a 30 year old car. The hood has a few dents and a few attempted touch ups from the previous owner that weren't done very well. The paint on the bumpers is cracking and the grill has a few cracks in it but it is complete. The trunk is starting to rust from under the spoiler too. I was going to remove the spoiler and paint just the rear portion of the trunk and also have the hood and bumpers re-done but I have too many other projects going on and I didn't have the time. It has a brand new convertible top on it but the fit isn't the best.
Interior:I never got around to detailing the interior but it will clean up nice. The carpet needs to be shampooed to get some coffee and grease stains out of it as well as the seats. There are no rips in the carpet or the front seats. The rear seat has a small 2" tear that can probably be sewn up. It is barely noticeable(see photo). There are a couple of trim pieces for the seat belts missing which I have shown in the photos.
Mechanical:All the GTA's came with a 2.0L throttle body fuel injected engine and a 5 speed manual transmission. I have done A LOT on this car since I purchased it. Every seal and gasket on the engine has been replaced including the valve seals and the head gasket just because I didn't want to deal with any oil leaks and the parts were dirt cheap. The timing belt and pulleys have been replaced and of course a tune up was done. The rear brakes are brand new as are the front brake pads. The ball joints are brand new and the front end was just aligned before it went to Carlisle in May. There is also a new clutch in the car. I'm sure that there is a lot more that I can't think of at the moment.
Issues:All four power windows work but the right rear works intermittently. There is also something wrong with the power top motor. It works for 1/4 of the cycle to put it up and down and then stops and just hear a relay click in the back. After 5 minutes it starts working again and stops. Again, I don't have time to mess with it and I'm not the best at electrical diagnostics so I turned the bypass valve and I have been operating the top manually all summer. I did buy a used top motor from a friend of mine that I will include with the sale of the car. The car needs exhaust work. The after market catalytic converter was rattling like crazy so I took it out and put on a factory catalytic that has been gutted out. It passed MA inspection because they only do safety checks. It still has the original exhaust system on it but the resonator has a hole in it and although it isn't very loud, you can definitely tell its leaking and at idle you can hear little pops from the back pressure. The A/C is all in tact but does not work. I never tried to charge it because I really don't care about A/C, especially on a convertible.
I've tried to be honest as I can on my description and I've probably made the car sound worse than it is but I've bought cars on line myself and I don't want to misrepresent the car and have a disappointed buyer. It is really an awesome running/driving car that needs a little time and money spent on it to make it perfect. The handling on these cars is amazing and this one has done a few laps on the autocross track in Carlisle. If you would like to inspect the car prior to bidding or have any questions please contact me. Buyer to arrange for pick-up or transportation. The car is being sold as is.
