Car description

While the stories of it being a replacement for the 911 are probably greatly exaggerated, the 928 blossomed into one of the era's greatest grand touring machines. Ferociously powerful, insanely fast, and immensely comfortable, it was a no-compromises supercar that you could drive every day. This 1988 928 S4 is an outstanding example, offering lots of originality, maintenance records, and a life lived easy in Texas since new. So whether it was 'Risky Business', or 'Weird Science', or even 'Scarface' that got you to fall in love with the 928, now's your chance to own that dream.

Admittedly, the 928 was a love-it-or-hate-it design (although it's certainly very en vogue again now), but nobody can argue that it hasn't aged gracefully. Smooth and purposeful, it still generates a ton of attention out on the road, and despite its modest asking price, folks will still think you won the lottery if you park it in your garage. Nothing works better on a Porsche of any kind than slick black, which gives this 928 S4 the star appeal of a Ferrari and matches its exotic engine note. It was Porsche's most expensive model by a wide margin in 1988, and for your house-sized sticker price, you got some of the world's best build quality. Fit and finish are exemplary, and the ingot-like feeling of the structure gives it a solid feel on the road. Introduced in 1987, the S4 offered a reshaped front fascia, redesigned taillights, and of course, that indistinguishable separate rear wing. The exterior on this one is still sharp. The original black paint is quite nice for a car in this price range, and the black trim still looks pretty darn fresh as well, even today. With a long life spent in Texas since new, it doesn't look like this car has ever spent a day in foul weather.

Typical Porsche focus on the driver dominates the interior, with comfortable black leather buckets and a perfect driving position. The power seats are in great shape showing very minimal wear despite their age, and the leather remains supple and smooth, not dry and cracked. All the factory components are still in place, including the steering wheel (one of the first things swapped-out back in the '80s for cheesy performance parts), so everything really looks right at home. The instruments are all fully functional, and the S4 came only one way: loaded, so that means power windows/seats/locks, ice cold A/C, and a power sunroof are included. Amazingly, even the original Blaupunkt stereo is still in place, but I think you'll prefer the rumble of the V8 up front. The carpets are plush, door panels look great, and, well, the prior owners of this Porsche clearly took exceptional care of this sizzling sports car.

The S4 also received a new 5.0 liter 32-valve V8 rated at 316HP that idles like a big block Camaro and pulls like a freight train. Its lightweight aluminum construction ensures an almost perfect weight distribution, aided by the rear-mounted 4-speed automatic transaxle. Don't bemoan the presence of an automatic here, though, because experts and Porsche fans almost universally agree that the autobox is the better and more reliable choice in these models. The engine bay is practically spotless, looking almost new thanks to those dedicated previous owners, and lots of service/maintenance records add confidence to what is already a very reliable machine. The chassis shows only minor signs of use, but it's also proof that this is a southern car, clean and straight. The look is finished off with those iconic stock Porsche wheels, which wear 165/50/15 front and 245/45/16 rear Sumitomo performance radials.

An A-list performance car with a pedigree, this V8 Porsche is the most thrilling daily driver you'll ever own. Or is it a blue-ribbon collector's piece now? We'll let you make that decision. Call today!
