1961 Porsche 356 D’Ieteren Super Roadster
VIN/Chassis Number 89066
Engine Number 88306
Transaxle Number 42111 11 126 04 147/2
The car was sold at Brumos Porsche Car Corp. in Jacksonville,FL. It left the factory on 5/30/61 and sold 8/29/61. I have the Kardex which confirms the matching numbers of the engine, transaxle, and body. The car was initially sold to a physician but he only had it for a few months. According the the second owner, the physician had an opportunity to buy a Super 90 roadster so after about three months and around 2300 miles, it was traded. The second owner purchased it. I don't have the invoice but it would have been interesting. He traded a ’59 356 A sunroof and a Carrera Speedster with a blown engine plus around $2500 cash. The second owner had possession of the car until my purchase in 2010. The car was being restored at Eurowerks in Commerce, Texas when I first saw it. Unfortunately, there was illness in the owners family and work on the car had ceased. I was able to purchase the project as the third owner and the restoration was resumed. The restorer was able to confirm it was a matching numbers car including the body panels. The vehicle was completely disassembled and professionally restored to “as new†condition in all aspects. The odometer reads 17,327. It has been around once so the actual mileage is 117,327.
Body
It is signal red (6011 B) which is the original color. No panel replacements were required including the battery box. There was no rust. The typical seam seal applied at D’Ieteren remains. The body was stripped to bare metal. It was painted with the highest grade materials. The gaps are correct. The pan was also stripped and a light coat of Wurth undercoat was applied. There is a small 3mm chip on the top of the right door that has not been professionally repaired. There evidently was a small dent in the right rear fender that had been repaired properly. This was discovered when the car was stripped.
Interior
The interior is has been restored with black leather as it waswhen it left the factory. It was done tooriginal specby Autobahn Interiors in San Diego, CA. It is in excellent condition. The carpets fit nicely and the door panels are well done. The sun visor is original and unrestored.
Engine #88306
The engine is an original 1600 Super. The machine work was done at Competition Engineering by Walt Watson at Lake Isabella, CA. It was assembled by the team at Eurowerks. Currently there is approximately 3,000( now 5,700 after the recent trip)miles on the engine. It has been carefully broken in. It runs very well. It does drip some oil. This has not been a problem since most of the cars in my shopseem to share this trait.
Transaxle #42111 11 126 04 147/2
Original to the car. It was rebuilt by Vic Skirmants of 356 Enterprises. I believe the additional numbers above are his notation. It shifts well with no grinding. No clutch issues. The shiftcoupler was recently replaced with the updated version.
Suspension, brake, steering all operate properly. All components have been restored or replaced.
Vredestein Sprint Classic tires have around 6,000 miles. The suspension and brakes are essentially new. Steers in a straight line. The wheels are date matched and were chromed at the request of the previous owner. It originally had painted wheels.
In general, this is a very solid original fully restored 356. The people involved in the restoration are well established and among best in the business. I have owed it for over a decade. It is driven regularly. It is always stored in a climate controlled shop. It is serviced at regular intervals. I have the original owners manual as well as the factory service book and maintenance manual. There is a jack but unfortunately no tool kit.
We recently completed a 2700 mile trip this fall to Flagstaff, AZ to attend the 356 Porsche West Coast Holiday. The trip was an adventure which was pure joy. It is a solid reliable driver.
I am reluctant to sell but I have too many projects and it's time to start reducing the number of relics. Ask any question and I will do my best to answer it honestly. My Ebay feedback supports this. I have owned 356 Porsches since 1971 and have been a member of the 356 Registry since the mid 1970's. This does not make me an expert. I want this car to go to a good home and I want the buyer to be happy with the purchase and know what they are buying. I have many photos and I am willing to take more. I will have photos posted on Photo Bucket. Contact me for the link. It will be available for inspection by appointment during the auction. Ideally, it should be inspected prior to purchase like any other car. There may be concerns not mentioned that I am notaware of. This is a 59 year oldcar that is sold “as is, where is†without guarantee written or implied. I will assure that the buyer will have more information about the car than I was told prior to my purchase. Thecar will be picked up at my house. I will not deliver. I can help load. I require a $500.00 payment toPayPal within 24 hours and the balance in 5 days. The car must be picked up within 2 weeks. It will not leave here until satisfactory payment has been made. If you cannot meet these requests, please do not bid. Thanks for your interest.
