This is a very original three owner vehicle; second owner for 34 Years. The first owner was Jack Rosenberg who bought car new from Ralph Cutwright VW Porsche in Encino, CA . There is a Porsche maintenance book with the stamped in perforated partial serial number on the front page section, also denoting the original engine number. There is a close up picture of the matching numbered stamp pad next to the maintenance book picture showing the two numbers toward the end of the picture gallery. Also in the maintenance book (picture attached) there is a page notating the speedometer replacement at 4970 miles with a stamp by the dealer that sold the car to Jack Rosenberg. Thus the current mileage on the odometer reading at 98456 plus the 4970 brings the total mileage on the vehicle to 103,426.
The second owner Ron Dulin from Long Beach, CA had the car from 1972 til 2014. Ron had the car for 42 years. The car was a daily driver for Ron for a but a few years before relegated to weekend fun/collector car. From August of 1994 til February 2014 the car was basically in storage. You will note the mileage on the 1994 receipt from Autohaus in Long Beach (88521) to the Autohaus receipt in 2014 (88801) is less than 300 miles traveled. The 2014 receipt shows the gas tank was cleaned out and much was done to refresh the fluids, brakes, carbs etc to begin driving the car again. It was right after that recommissioning that the car was purchased by the current owner who has driven the car for the past four years.
John has driven the car roughly 8600 miles in the last four years. Attached at the bottom of this writeup is his mileage intervals between oil and other fluid changes and valve adjustments. John is the ultimate Porsche owner and is fastidious with the care and maintenance of his vehicles. John is only selling it because he found a very similar soft window ’68 912 that he has always desired. This is the kind of guy you hope to buy a car from, meticulous is the word that comes to mind.
Since his purchase the car has lived everyday of its life garaged and has always been a fun weekend car for John. John and his wife have used the car for short trips and 912 events. If you are a West Coast Porsche guy you may already know this little gem.
I am helping John sell this vehicle. I have been a long time PCA member and NCRS (Corvette) guy. My time working on and restoring automobiles for the last 40 years have served me well in the critique of other automobiles. I judge several venues of automobile classes as well as concour events here in Southern CA. I would rate this car as a solid #2 condition survivor type car. It is one of the most fun cars I had ever driven, tight and solid with wonderful driving characteristics.
BODY & PAINT
The body on this 912 is in excellent shape and appears to have not been hit in its life. I can find no areas that look like it has been worked. Take a look at the body gaps in the pictures and also in the video walk-around… they are crisp and they match all the way around the car. The doors, hood and trunk all shut perfectly. I can see no evidence of body filler in this car anywhere.
If you look at the receipts there is one from Laszlo’s Sports Car Center in Long Beach in 1976, where the car was painted last. Laszlo was very well known for high-quality repaints (what a testament to his work here). Written on the receipt it says “whole car same color - outside only” & “acrylic enamel”. So the car was apparently stripped on the outside and the jambs were left the original paint. When studying the car you see no indication of overspray anywhere on rubber or trim, so I am assuming this was a “window’s out” respray of the car. It also makes reference to new rubber.
Describing the paint condition now is an interesting task. I am a certifiable “survivor” freak and had noticed this car around town for the last couple of years and had seen it up close at Cars & Coffee several times and thought it was a 100% survivor. When I finally asked John about it one day he said it had been repainted back in the 70’s. I was shocked.
The paint just has that “look” that I absolutely would kill for, it is what I would call almost a semi-gloss yet shiny look to it, like cars were painted back in that era. Everyone today likes two-stage shiny paint jobs, but I prefer this kind of look to the paint, because this is how they were. It has an absolute perfect “original” paint “look” to it. Now, it is a 44 year old paint job, so it does have some minor blemishes from age around the car, but mostly it looks very even from panel to panel. If you look at one of the rear shots straight on, it appears like the fenders and the back lid are different colors, but that is not the case. The contrast in color is simply because of the way the light is hitting the hood directly and diffused away from the fenders. The paint color matches very near perfection all the way around the car. There are literally no dings or scraps or severe blemishes in the paint anywhere. I would be more than happy to take this to any Porsche event. The survivor freaks will prefer this car to most of the concour quality paint jobs. The paint job is very period correct and in superb shape.
On the survivor scale I would rate the body a 9.7 and the paint a 9+. I simply cannot convey how cool this paint looks. The pictures are a very accurate representation. The pictures from the dead front angle were taken in the shade in the back of my house, not out in the sunlight like the rest of the pictures. So the paint appears to be a much duller color, but it is not. As a final note, I would NEVER repaint this car. Period.
INTERIOR
The interior is in amazing original condition and shows some minor age obviously, but there are no tears or blemishes on the front sides of the seat, dash or door panels. The driver seat back side panel has some tape where there were some small tears in the fabric. I am assuming something got jammed in and cut into the fabric (see pictures attached).
The dash and door panels, rear seats and carpet are all in great shape and are as nice as I have seen on a survivor car like this. The Targa Top is in excellent condition and there was a receipt for the top in the book of records, so it may have been done at some point. The pictures will describe the top better than I can.
On the survivor scale I would call the overall interior a 9+.
MECHANICAL
Mechanically the car runs very well. It starts on the first turn of the key and idles and drives out beautifully. The top end of the engine was gone through at 72638 in August of 1976 and was punched out to 1750cc . The car does not appear to use oil or smoke. It has plenty of power. The 4-speed transmission shifts like butter.
In December of 2015, Jack Staggs Vintage Specialists (only works on 356 & 912’s for 45 years, same shop in San Clemente, CA) replaced the clutch, transmission mounts and seals as well as the main seal. Recently he replaced the front struts, rear shocks, new bushings front and rear and tie rods. Jack has also adjusted the valves and redone the carbs and R&R the fuel sending unit. Jack Staggs is one of the pre-eminent gurus of the 356 ranks and an article in Road & Track about him appeared in 2017. He is the master and let me tell you, this car is “dialed” in mechanically. Please read all the maintenance items listed below and all receipts are attached to this ad.
At 88521 the brake rotors and pads were gone through. The master cylinder was replaced at that time. The car stops with authority.
UNDERCARRIAGE
The undercarriage on this vehicle is extremely clean, the floor pans are all completely original with the factory undercoat still intact showcasing the life of a Southern CA Porsche. The paint on the surfaces of the under the trunk is all original black paint. In 2017 John replaced the right side battery box area and the front suspension pan and right gas tank support as there was evidence of rust in those areas, presumably from a battery gone bad. Jack recommended the repair and man who did it. It was done to perfection.
WHEELS & TIRES
When John bought the car it had Fuchs on it and he decided to find a period set of chrome wheels. I believe two were 69 date code and two were 70. In April of 2014 he bought five new Michelin MXV4 195/65/15 at a cost of $810.
The current outside mirror is larger and the original mirror comes with the car.
This is probably as nice an original unmolested 912 as i have ever personally been around or seen. It has lived its entire life right here in Southern CA… there is just nothing like these cars from this desert type climate with virtually no humidity. This is a wonderful low mileage survivor-type driver that is getting increasingly difficult to find.
You would be proud to show up with at any Porsche meet. This would also be the kind of car that someone might purchase to do a concour type restoration as the metal and undercarriage are so pristine.
