1967 Porsche 912
Rare Soft Window Targa, Short Wheelbase
We have available a very rare 1967 Porsche 912 short wheelbase soft rear window Targa. This was the earliest design for the Targa and it has the unique feature that allows convertible-like driving experience with only the roll bar Targa band in place when the soft rear window is removed. This soft window feature also contributed to water leaks and loss of body integrity due to rust issues, so the feature was quickly replaced by the common fixed glass rear window. About 1,200 short wheelbase 912’s were made as soft rear window cars. These cars were considered crude oddities of early 912 and 911 production for decades. Now they are very sought after for the easily recognized rear window. Since fifty years has passed, a low survival rate makes them very hard to find and the feature unique. The registry lists perhaps 100 survivors. This car still remains with its factory applied Sand Beige code 6607. This is VIN number 550396 which makes it the 396 one built. This is a nice survivor car with solid floor pans and good mechanicals that has been sympathetically maintained at a good driver level. The removable Targa panel appears original and is has flawed covering one would expect for its age. It has a Porsche COA that confirms it is still matching numbers with engine number 837032 and optional 5-speed transmission number 238616. The valuable tool kit is still with the car. The car was sold last year on Bring A Trailer and had a thorough vetting by that community, pictures and info are still posted on that site. We were asked to sympathetically refurbish the car so as to not erase it’s history and originality. We have been careful to only replace items that were not serviceable or not original. Therefore a full original style carpet set was a needed improvement. The floors under the poor quality replacement carpets were very solid with only slight surface rust which we neutralized and coated before carpets were fitted. The entire body was in very good condition with only minor parking lot type damage to the front bumper and valance, and a rust spot thru the lower r/h fender. We decided the damage was distracting enough to warrant a new fender and refinish of both front fenders, the hood and bumper and lower front valance. The color and finish match to the original paint on the doors back is so good one would think entire car was refinished. It has the proper luster and gloss for this period paint. There only remains a couple very minor door dings on the rear part of car that would not warrant losing the original finish to remove. We have markedly improved the cars condition since acquired from that May of 2016 sale. It still could be improved by a more thorough cleaning and detailing by a particular owner. The car is now a very solid and usable driver, goes down the road with nice power, and shifts and stops well. A noise in the transmission was mentioned in prior service records but it is so slight as to not necessitate further attention at this time. We inspected and serviced the car. Included work was new rebuilt front calipers, and front wheel bearing repack. The car is a very nice driving example of a rare and desirable model. This model early Porsche will always be sought after for its unique features and well balanced handling.
