The fruit of collaboration between Porsche and Volkswagen, a 1971 Porsche 914 Targa, has landed at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. The Porsche 914 was a mid-engined, targa-topped two-seater roadster sports car manufactured and marketed collaboratively by Volkswagen and Porsche from 1969 to 1976.
Dressed in Irish Green, (code L60E), the paint and trim are in overall very good order. The targa’s windows are clear and crack-free and its lights are in good order too. The car rolls on 165R15 radials, surrounding eight-spoke, polished alloy wheels and are in overall very good shape. The Porsche’s body panels solid and straight, including the bumpers and black vinyl targa roof. The targa roof bar was designed to serve has a roll bar as well.
Out back is an air-cooled fuel injected 1.7L inline four-cylinder engine linked to a five-speed manual transmission. Porsche engineers gave the 914 near perfect weight distribution with 45% in the front and 55% in the the rear.
Inside, the bucket seats are in good order but the driver’s seat’s outer seatback bolster has a wear spot. The matching black carpet is in decent order, as is the headliner. The instrument panel with its VDO gauges is in overall fair condition but shows some blemishes. In the center stack are AutoMeter clock, voltage and oil temperature gauges. The original four-spoke steering wheel is present. The inner door panels, mirror glass, center console and shifter are all in good order. Completing the interior is an Alpine AM/FM stereo with CD player and detachable faceplate. Cars produced up to early 1972 had a fixed passenger seat and a removable passenger footrest. Later cars featured a movable passenger seat. Other interior differences included changing vinyl designs, gauge appearance, and air vent configurations in the dash.
From 1970 to 1974, the 914 was offered with chrome or painted bumpers, that were apart of the rare Appearance Group Package. Underneath the chrome rear bumper are dual exhaust pipes with four chrome tips, which give this Porsche an more aggressive look.
The most significant performance upgrade during the vehicle's lifespan was the introduction of anti-roll bars, significantly improving the handling.
It makes for a sound driver or reasonable basis for a straightforward restoration. It has been suggested that this 914 was once part of the Matthew Drendel Family Porsche Collection.
Competition to this Porsche in 1971 included Ford’s Capri, Chevrolet’s Vega, Dodge’s Colt and Opel’s GT.
Documentation includes original owner’s manual and carrying case for stereo’s detachable faceplate.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 71 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
