The Porsche 968 Porsche's entry level sports car produced from 1992 to 1995. The 968 is the final iteration of their front engine 4 cylinder sports cars starting with the 924 through the 944 and finally the 968. The 968 was original conceived as the S3 version of the 944 but by the time the Porsche engineers had finished all the modifications and upgrades 80% of the car was different from the 944 and was worthy of its own designation. Porsche also made the decision to move the 968 production from the Audi plant in Neckarsulm (where the 924 and 944 had been manufactured under contract to Porsche), to Porsche's own factory in Zuffenhausen.

The most notable modifications were the increase in displacement of the 944 engine to 3.0 litres in the 968, producing 237 bhp. Further changes to the 968's powertrain included the addition of Porsche's newly introduced VarioCam variable valve timing system and fully optimized induction and exhaust systems. A new 6-speed manual transmission replaced the 944's old 5-speed, and Porsche's dual-mode Tiptronic automatic was offered as an available option. Styling changes were also made to a sleeker look to follow more closely the look of the upmarket 928.
