MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to offer this 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet.
Made in Stuttgart, Germany in June 1988, and dressed in hard-to-find genuine black (code 700) with a brand new, black, correct, Haartz cloth power top, this cabrio features paint that is in very good condition, with only a few blemishes visible upon close inspection. The glass panes are in great condition. The headlights show some haze but the lenses are intact and all of the other lights are in good shape. The body panels are mostly straight, from blunt nose to whale tail. Bumpers are in fine condition. The car rolls on Fuchs forged and polished alloy wheels (16×6 in front, 16×7 in rear) tucked inside Yokohama rubber, A540s on the front, size 205/55R16 and AS430s on the back, sized 225/50R16.
Under the rear hood is a 3.2L air-cooled, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection, making 217 horsepower. It’s hooked to a five-speed Getrag synchronized manual transmission with the available shorter shift lever. The previous owner had a new, black, Haartz cloth power top installed in March 2016 and in July 2016, he had the clutch master and slave cylinders replaced, brake fluid flushed, worn shifter components replaced and connections lubricated. Up front in the trunk is a Porsche portable air pump and a Super Start battery. Car came equipped with factory alarm system.
Inside, the linen leather (code NA) seats (driver’s is powered) and black carpet are in good overall condition as is the black dashboard, tan door panels, mirrors and black shifter, tan shifter boot and center console. There’s a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with a CD player and Carrera floor mats. The steering wheel has some cosmetic blemishes and the factory air-conditioning is incomplete and inoperative but all the heater parts are reinstalled and functioning. Driver assist features include power driver’s seat and cruise control.
The Porsche 911 (pronounced Nine Eleven or in German: Neunelf) is a two-door, 2+2 high performance sports car made by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany since 1963, as a rear-mounted six-cylinder boxer engine and all-independent suspension. It has undergone continuous development, though the basic concept has remained little changed.
It is one of two cars that had remained continuously in production and was until 1998 a successful surviving application of the air- (now water-) cooled opposed rear-engine layout pioneered by its ancestor, the Volkswagen Beetle. The 911 is one of the oldest sports coupé nameplates still in production, and 820,000 had been sold by the car’s 50th anniversary in 2013.
This model, the 911 3.2 Carrera, replaced the SC series in 1984, reviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. This was the last iteration in the original 911 series, with all subsequent models featuring new body styling with new brake, electronic and suspension technologies.
A new higher-displacement motor, a 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat six-cylinder, was utilized. At the time Porsche claimed it was 80 percent new. The new swept volume of 3164 cc was achieved using the 95 mm bore from the previous SC model combined with the 1978 Turbo 3.3 crankshaft’s 74.4 mm stroke. New inlet manifold and exhaust systems were fitted. In 1987, the Carrera received a new Getrag G50 five-speed gearbox with proven BorgWarner synchronizers and a hydraulically-operated clutch.
The brake discs were increased in size for more effective heat dissipation and the engine received improved oil-fed chain tensioners. To improve oil cooling, a finned cooler replaced the serpentine lines in the front passenger fender well. This was further improved in 1987, with the addition of a thermostatically controlled fan.
Driving refinement and motor reliability were improved with an upgrade of the fuel and ignition control components to a L-Jetronic with Bosch Motronics 2 DME (Digital Motor Electronics system). An improvement in fuel-efficiency was due to the DME providing a petrol cut-off on the overrun. Changes in the fuel map and chip programming from October 1986 further improved the power to 217 bhp @ 5900 rpm for North American-delivered cars as well as for other markets mandating low emissions, like Germany.
Three basic models were available – coupé, targa and cabriolet. The Carrera is almost indistinguishable from the SC with the external clue being the front fog lights that were integrated into the front valance. Only cosmetic changes were made during the production of the Carrera, with a redesigned dash featuring larger air conditioning vents appearing in 1986.
According to the manufacturer, around 150,000 911 cars from the model years 1964 to 1989 are still on the road today. Total production of the 911 3.2 Carrera series was 76,473 cars (35,670 coupé, 19,987 cabrio, 18,468 targa).
In 1999, the 911 placed fifth in the Car of the Century competition, trailing mass market cars: Ford Model T, BMC Mini, Citroën DS and Volkswagen Beetle. In 2004, Sports Car International named the 911 Carrera number seven on its list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s. In addition, the 911 was voted number two on Automobile Magazine’s list of the “100 Coolest Cars.” Motor Trend chose the Porsche 911 Carrera S as its Best Driver’s Car for 2012. It also won “World Performance Car Of The Year” in 2014. In 2015, Car and Driver named the Porsche 911 “the best premium sports car on the market.”
Competitors to this car in 1988 included the Corvette Convertible, the Ferrari 328 GTS, and the Aston Martin V-8 Vantage Volanté.
Car comes with owner’s manual, some service tickets and other miscellaneous documentation. This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current reading on the odometer shows 88,228 miles and is understood to be actual. It is sold as is, where is on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
