In one of the most dramatic turnarounds in automotive history, Pontiac rose from near-extinction to holding third place in American sales rankings from 1962 through 1969. Pontiac excitement was heightened by masterful marketing orchestrated by Jim Wangers, plus beautiful ads by Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman. The Catalina was fundamental to Pontiacs success, available in four body styles with a wide array of power teams, delivering GTO-like performance with taut handling and full-size comfort.
This 1965 Pontiac Catalina convertible is an exceptionally original and well preserved example that we at The Last Detail have sought and recently acquired. Retaining the original Starlight Black paint finish, confirmed by consistent paint-meter readings, this very fine Catalina also features excellent original Black upholstery and an undamaged dash, topped by an original White convertible top that remains in remarkably good condition.
Power is delivered by a rare (1 of 426 built) WF-suffix 389 CI V-8 engine delivering 338 factory-rated horsepower with Pontiacs legendary Tri-Power intake system mounting triple 2-barrel carburetors underneath a free-breathing twin-snorkel air cleaner, plus dual exhaust and a heavy-duty radiator. A Muncie 4-speed manual transmission delivers the power via an iconic Hurst floor-shift lever. In addition to power-assisted brakes, steering and the power-operated convertible top, this amazing Catalina is further equipped with a split front bench seat, a pushbutton AM radio, heater/defroster, plus a column-mounted Sun tachometer, auxiliary gauges, and Pontiacs unique 8-lug aluminum wheels.
A recent test drive confirms this beautiful, rare, and highly original Catalinas outstanding driving experience. In addition to delivering strong acceleration and smooth shift action, the car is as enjoyable to drive as it is to look at. Freshly tuned and detailed, this incredibly original 1965 Catalina convertible includes a Pontiac Historical Services document package and reproduction window sticker. Simply put, it is a true benchmark example of Pontiacs potent full-size performers for 1965. Contact us today, see it for yourself, and make it yours for spring enjoyment!
