Pontiac was exited to celebrate its 10th anniversary of the Trans Am in 1979, and with the excitement brought a limited production of 7,500 special edition examples. Most were loaded with all available options to include air conditioning, WS6 performance package, power windows, power locks, mirrored T-top roof panels, and power trunk release. Additional attributes included a special two-tone silver/charcoal paint scheme, oversized Trans Am decals and hood bird, along with plush silver/gray leather & vinyl interior combination. A special car indeed, and one with an original MSRP of over $10,600 in base form! Today, you can find these 10th Anniversary example in various forms and conditions, some of which have already been restored to the personal tastes of the owner. This original Silver Anniversary example featured here was tastefully restored in 2018/2019 with wonderful results!
Finished in full Dark Charcoal Gray over Black Vinyl interior today, this beautiful 1979 Pontiac Trans Am has been completely restored, both mechanically and cosmetically. Beginning with a very solid, Los Angeles built 10th Anniversary Edition, it was completely stripped and disassembled to begin a fully photo documented restoration. The original engine was not worthy of a rebuild, so a date code correct 403ci V8 replacement engine was be sourced. It would be sent to Imperial Automotive & Machine Shop for hot tanking, cylinder bore, new freeze plugs, ground crankshaft, machined heads, complete valve job with all new valves, new pistons/rings; main, rod, and cam bearings; new pushrods, all new seals including rear main, gaskets, and high-temp engine paint. A rebuilt carburetor, new spark plugs & wires, water pump, fuel pump, all fuel lines to the gas tank, new alternator, high torque starter, battery, hoses, clamps, fluids & filters were all installed fresh. The original radiator was boiled and repaired as necessary by Arnold Radiator and combined with new engine thermostat during installation. The air conditioning system was fully serviced and retrofitted to R134a for easier servicing and future maintenance. The transmission was completely rebuilt by Fisher's Transmission Service with all new clutches, gaskets, seals, filter, torque converter, and mild shift kit.
All while the engine was being prepared, the balance of the car was being prepped for a professional repaint. With only minor rust located in the forward, rear quarter panels, small replacement patches were fitted professionally. Photographs of the car's condition before and after the body work is included supporting these minimal repairs. It was then painted in base coat coat/clear coat fashion in all Dark Charcoal Metallic. All new weather stripping from Soft Seal, Inc. would be fitted to the door jams, trunk surround, T-top openings, outer window scraps, inner window felts, and more! The chassis was fitted with new front springs, rear leaf springs & shackles, four new shocks, inner & outer tie-rods, front ball joints, sway bar bushings, cushion pads, bump stops, and traditional WS6 15x8 Snowflake wheels with new BF Goodrich Radial T/A measuring 245/60R15 raised white letter tires. The original 10th Anniversary turbine style wheels/tires are included with the sale.
The interior was fully refinished to all black with products from Classic Industries which included new headliner, all seating surfaces, door panels, armrests, carpet & sound deadener underlayment, refinished dash & center console, wrapped steering wheel, rear package tray, seat belts, and more. Finishing the car's presentation and sound included exterior decals in shapes of orange without the traditional hood bird, and a true dual exhaust system to include Thorton exhaust manifolds and Magnaflow mufflers with H-pipe! The results are splendid and represent a special vehicle ready to be driven and enjoyed. Included with the sale will be 2 sets of keys, the original anniversary wheels, parts & service receipts, restoration photos, new trunk mat, original space saver spare tire, and clear Missouri title. We invite inspections and offers. Priced aggressively considering the restoration costs! Act quickly!
