The facts are these: Real-deal 1969 Pontiac GTO, burly 400 cubic inch V8, awesome color combination, and a nice set of options. Need more? Good, because this GTO gets all the big stuff right and then makes you fall in love with the details. You probably haven't seen too many Claret Red '69 GTOs before, but now that you have, you're probably wondering why everyone makes such a fuss over Carousel Red. This shade of red is... sophisticated, elegant, and more than attention-grabbing... it's impossible to ignore! Gaps are just the way the factory did it, the bodywork appears to have never been wrecked or rusty, so getting it straight was easy, and even the Endura front bumper that surrounds the grille is in very good shape. The finish is miles deep and if we had to pick nits, we'd suggest a professional color sand and buff to really make it sparkle, but it's still a very solid driver-quality paint job that looks great going down the road. There's a black vinyl top adding a touch of sophistication, so this handsome GTO is definitely a gentleman's hot rod. All the chrome and stainless trim is in great original condition, more proof that it's led an easy life someplace warm. This is an authentic car that truly sparkles in every possible way. The correct black interior continues the slick look of this GOAT, showing off the softer side of this Pontiac's muscle. The seats are wrapped in high-end patterned vinyl and show very little wear, the door panels are excellent, and the headliner remains taut, further suggesting that this car was always treated as a member of the family. The options list includes a woodgrained center console, original 3-spoke wheel, AM/FM radio, factory A/C (though the compressor needs servicing), and a set of three auxiliary gauges mounted under the dash. The gauges remain in good condition with complete lenses and bright markings and even the woodgraining on the console and dash is crisp, clear, and bright. The trunk is nicely finished, with spatter paint on the floor, a correct mat, and a full-size spare tire that's quite possibly on the original rim. Have we mentioned how impressed we are with this car? Few machines are as feared as the legendary Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8, and while this one isn't the original powerplant, it's a correct YS block with a few added goodies. The block fires on command, and it cackles like something that escaped from a cage and pulls the GTO around with effortless ease. Dressed a little flashier than the way the factory would have done it, there's an Edelbrock open-element air cleaner, Edelbrock Performer intake, and a deep-breathing Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. Underneath, it's neatly assembled, with a big front sway bar, a great-sounding H-pipe dual exhaust system, plus the best-shifting TH400 automatic transmission we've driven in a long, long time. Correct Pontiac Rally wheels with shiny stainless trim rings wear fat G70/R14 Firestone tubeless redlines at all four corners for a serious performance look. The ultimate combination of looks and power, all at a price that makes this GTO a car you won't be afraid to drive.
