Car description

LOTS OF MONEY SPENT! YOUR GAIN!

This is a NUMBERS-MATCHING GTO. I bought this 1972 GTO in 2013. I selected this particular car because (1) it was showing 58,xxx miles which the seller (and me) believe was correct, and (2) other than some surface rust (see photos) it was a rust-free unmodified car. Other than a repaint in the original color in 1979 (the seller said due to "paint oxidation”), it was truly a survivor car.

I have the original PROTECTO-PLATE and have the PHS docs.

Although everything pretty much worked, I decided to make it more than right. Nearly $28,000 in parts and labor later (receipts go with the car), it is more than right mechanically. Here are some highlights (and not nearly everything):

PERFORMANCE: I had the engine rebuilt with slightly hotter cam and stroked it to a 460 from 400. Everything inside the engine was replaced with high quality parts. Suspension was rebuilt and all suspension bushings replaced. I replaced the transmission with a 700R-4. Much better at freeway speeds than the original. However, to keep my ability to call it a numbers-matching car, the original transmission goes with the car to a buyer. Wheels and tires were upgraded by an inch all around. What appears to be the original spare tire still sits in the trunk. I have all receipts and records for every dollar I have spent - even for gasoline - since purchasing the car.

EXTERIOR/BODY&PAINT: As I purchased it. The paint is driver-quality and has door dings and paint imperfections. If you want to win trophies, you will need to repaint the car. There is some surface rust (see photos) in various places on the frame and underbody but all body panels appear to be very solid. There is some minor surface rust in the trunk (see photos). You can stick a magnet anywhere without it falling off.

INTERIOR: I replaced the ugly standard 2-spoke steering wheel with the "TransAm" type. Fits much better in my hand, but for the purist, the original steering wheel goes with the car. I replaced the carpet and added sound deadening material under that when we did the work. The dash has some cracking and there are a few small splits in the seat covers. I also installed extended seat brackets. Being a tall guy, that gives me more room. These could be returned to stock.

ELECTRICS: The original non-working AM radio is in the car, but the former owner added an aftermarket one and aftermarket speakers. All gauges work, although the gas gauge doesn't read quite correctly all the time. All lights, turn signals and other electrics work. The horn sometimes decides to not work, but since I'm always out ahead of everyone I don't use it! Due to the non-stock wheel/tire combination, the speedometer is not entirely accurate. The A/C was completely rebuilt and works well in the Texas heat.

I am a car enthusiast and took very good care of this car while I had it. Kept out of the rain and always in my climate-controlled garage while I owned it.
