I mean, really race. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Pro-Street loaded with a powerful 540 CID Merlin V8 built by Alabama racer Rex Kelley.
It started life as a regular Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, built in GM’s Norwood, Ohio factory on the fourth week of April 1976. It left the line dressed in Firethorn Red with a white interior. Now, the car is dressed in Candy Apple Red with Ghost Flames with a black interior. The paint and trim are in overall great shape but do show some minor imperfections.
Rex Kelley, who races in the IHRA Outlaw series, built this car. Under the hood is a 540 CID Merlin crate V-8 engine with 9:1 compression, making 580 horsepower and 625 pounds-feet of torque, from Mitchell Hard Core Racing in New York. Engine has Hooker headers and three-inch exhausts. Backing the motor is a Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” four-speed manual transmission with a scattershield and a 4.10:1 Dana 60 rear end from Competition Engineering. The engine also sports a Be Cool aluminum radiator with electric fans and a dash-mounted on/off switch. Driver convenience features include power steering and power, four-wheel vented disc brakes.
The windows are clear and intact, the lights are haze-free, the bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is quite tidy and the Endura body-colored bumpers look great. Underneath, the car has coilover shock absortbers, and an adjustable four-ladder link bar. As added style, Kelly had Ferrari 308 door inserts added to the body, shaved the exterior handles. The fender flares, front air dem and fender heat extractors are also Frenched. The car has an aftermarket twin turbo hood, its fuel cell is located in the trunk and all of the car’s weatherstripping and rubber has been replaced.
In the rear are Mickey Thompson tires, size 29/18.50-15 on Centerline wheels with 225.60 BFGoodrich radials on 15-inch Centerline wheels in front. The wheels and tires are in very good condition.
Inside are Corbeau GT front buckets with RC five-point harnesses and a Grant GT four-spoke steering wheel. The front seats look fantastic, as does the Grant thick-rimmed wheel. The instrument panel still sports its stainless-steel appliqué and is overall good order but the tachometer is inoperable. New parts include the center console, carpet and padded covers for the roll bar.
There is a build file of its history that accompanies the car.
If you’re looking to do more than simply cruise or drive, this Firebird Pro-Street Trans Am could be right up your dragstrip or race track, so stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check this one out.
