1966 PONTIAC CATALINA 2+2
1 OF 1885 BUILT!!
PHS DOCUMENTED!!
421 BIG BLOCK W/TRI POWER!!
ORIGINAL ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION!!(ENGINE & TRANS ARE ORIGINAL TO THE CAR AND DATE CODED CORRECTLY)
Every time I see the cars from the 60's it amazes me that they were once everyday drivers. We drove them to work, put groceries in them, parallel parked them on narrow city streets and maybe brought our babies home from the hospital in them. But there are a few things I will never forget about this era, and that's the sounds and smells a car like this would make when we mashed the gas pedal to the floor. There was no better era to grow up in other then the muscle car era if you're a car guy. You put a kid that was raised in the 80's and 90's in front of a car like this 66 Pontiac that was laying it all on the line, the screaming 421 big block, the tri power sucking the tank dry, the winding of the 4 speed as it bangs through the gears and the high pitch sound of the old bias ply tires, that kid will nearly soil himself at the intimidation of all that coming out of one car. It truly took your breath away...... those sounds will never get old.
This 66 Pontiac Catalina 2+2, which was the GTO's bigger brother, is such a rare find with its combination of engine and transmission it would be a great addition to any Pontiac enthusiast's collection. The name of 2+2 was added to give it a European connection to start competing with the growing amount of imports into the US, and meant that it sat 2 people in the front and 2 in the rear. Its a car that was never restored but extremely well cared for over 52 years. It is being offered to you today from a private collector that has to thin out his herd. This car has been decoded and it is all date coded correctly. Its the WG 421 Block with the correct 4 speed transmission. The tri power set up was added which was Pontiac's signature manifold set up....but wasn't born with the car. Please read on to find out the condition of this rare Pontiac Classic!!
Exterior:
The exterior is in excellent condition. It wears one older lacquer repaint that was done many years ago and still looks beautiful. The luster and depth are still strong and up close or far away it shows very well for its age. Please take note of the photos of the sides of the car and take not of the reflection and how straight they are. Up close you'll see a few lacquer cracks and some scuffs but overall very very presentable. You will not win concourse judging, but may take home a few trophies from the local events. The exterior body's sheet metal is all original and very very straight. All the chrome is in excellent condition and shows great shine as does all the bright work. The glass is all original and also in excellent condition. The vinyl roof was replaced many years ago and presents itself in excellent condition. There are a few blemishes under the rear molding of the vinyl top(see pics). Underneath the car, the floors are all solid and possibly a minor patch or two which was done correctly. Its hard to tell from the undercoating but as I mentioned earlier, it was maintained. The underneath could use a good cleaning and detail. Over all the condition is much better then a driver, it would stand tall at shows, but is not a trailer queen which allows you to drive and enjoy the vehicle. Please look at all the photos and video and let us know of any questions you may have.
Interior:
The interior is mostly original and in excellent condition. Only the front seats may have been redone, its hard for us to tell along with the carpets. Everything else is original and is in excellent condition. Everything works as well. The private collector that owns this car is a fanatic of making everything work including the radio and gauges. The interior presents so well it will definitely stand tall at any show or local cruise night. Please view all the photos and video including and let us know of any questions you may have.
Drive-Train:
The engine block code is WG which was the 421 Big Block. The 421 was built as a direct response to Chevy's 409, Ford's 406 and Mopar's 413 and it was such a force to be reckoned with. It was built with a forged steel crank and connecting rods and a four bolt main. In 1966 there were no vin #'s stamped on the block or transmission but from all the codes we pulled, this is the correct dated coded engine and transmission. The tri power was added later on and was the trade mark for Pontiac and designed to come alive when racing. The drive train in this 1966 Pontiac Catalina is in excellent running condition. It was well maintained and cared for through the years. You can literally get in and drive......anywhere. Please see the video of this car running and driving.
In Summation:
As we photographed this car at the collector's location(see below), we knew he was passionate about everyone of his cars, and the reason for selling was not because of the money, it was because he wanted to share the preservation of this car and many more that he will be selling. Thinning the herd is what he called it. He wanted a more manageable collection, cars that he could come in and drive on a moments notice and not having to move 10 cars to drive one. This is the real deal collectors, you're not buying from a dealer who flips cars, you're buying from a passionate collector who has cared for and maintained these rare beautiful muscle cars. An era that will never die.
