OVERVIEW:This Pontiac New Series 6-28 is a fairly rare. model 8240 2-dr. 5 passenger sedan. built by General Motors of Canada. Apart from newly replaced top wood. it is an honest original. unmolested and unrestored car. The car is very complete and solid. with 32. 51 original miles. Although its entire history is not known. it is believed to have resided in dry southern Alberta its whole life. It is also appears that this car did not spend much time exposed to the elements or winter roads. It is an estate sale. and this 6 cylinder Chief of the Sixes was last run about 2 years ago. Some fresh fuel and a new battery and this old girl should fire up and purr as she did back then. The car shows the normal wear and tear of its original miles and age. but overall it is a very solid and clean car. It is an excellent candidate for a correct restoration given its completeness. unmolested state. very solid wood and rust free condition. However. if you install the top covering and put some new tires on it and you can start going for ice cream. and do the restoration in segments while enjoying the car. or just keep its original patina. DRIVETRAIN:The engine is the original numbers matching (P322692) inline. split L-head 6 cylinder. displacing 186 ci. and rated at 40 hp. Includes original crank handle. Everything under the hood appears to be original equipment. and the car retains a 6-volt electrical system. The only modern looking items are the 2 rad hoses. It has Delco-Remy starter. generator and distributor. all with nice tags. and a Tillotson updraft carburetor. Plugs. points. and cap look good. Sediment bowl ahead of fuel pump is clean. It is equipped with a Dole fuel primer. Inspecting the gas tank with a mag-lite showed it to be quite clean. with about 1” of gas in it. slight stale smell. not too bad. We got fuel up to the sediment bowl. charged the battery some. checked for power at the coil. and attempted to start it. Turned over easily. didn’t fire. ran out of battery after 30-40 seconds of cranking. No further attempt has been made. I believe that with some fresh fuel and a good battery it should fire-up no problem. as long as fuel pump works. I will try to verify that the fuel pump is OK if I get time. and possibly get it going. The engine compartment is totally original and simply requires a good de-greasing and cleaning. Original splash pans still in place. The car is correctly equipped with a mechanical fuel pump. no problematic vacuum tank. The bracket on the firewall was perhaps for mounting an oil filter The honeycomb radiator core appears in good condition. no apparent leaks. but has had a repair at the right bottom corner. The original wiring harness does not appear frayed or flaking. Original connectors for the headlamps. The original shielded wire looms are still found on the headlamp and tail light wiring. as well as on the heavy starter cable. CHASSIS: The frame is totally solid and straight. there is no evidence of collision damage. and it is free of any heavy rust or cancer. It sports the road dirt of its miles and surface rust. with paint still evident in some areas. All suspension. steering and driveline components are original without modifications. Has the original style alemite grease fittings. The leaf springs still retain a positive arch with no evident sagging. The original link straps are still in place and intact on all 4 shock absorbers. It has mechanical 4 wheel brakes. The fronts are internal expanding and the rears are external contracting with lots of lining still on them. The brake system is intact and in working order. The exhaust system is has no tail pipe. The original 12 wood spoke wheels all appear to be solid and in good condition. and sport nice original hubcaps. They appear to have been originally painted black with white pin striping on the spokes. The running tires are 4. 75/5. 00 x 20 bias ply black walls. The right rear tire is a new Firestone. the other 3 are old. heavily cracked. and should be replaced. but they do hold air. BODY & PAINT: All wood throughout the car is in solid condition. The owner replaced all the top wood. along with a few other pieces as required. to end up with a solid body frame. He kept all the old wood pieces which were removed. they can go with the car. New top burlap and padding materials are installed. but the final new top material has not been installed. It is one large new piece of correct top material. Once it is installed. the original drip rails and trim moldings can be re-installed. Some of the moldings suffered from bending upon removal. but they easily be straightened and re-used. The original headliner is folded up. good for a pattern to make a new one. Original outside cloth visor still on the car. There is no evidence of it having had any previous body work. or repaint. The only exception is the owner sprayed some fresh green paint on the top driver side of the hood. I suspect he simply did this as a color test for the paint he bought for it. There is a full gallon. and a quart. of 2 different shades of the original 2-tone greens. Given that he removed the side moldings which cover the sheet metal body nails. I surmise he was preparing to repaint the car its original body colors. There are no hidden secrets to this car. There is no evidence of any serious collision damage. and the body and sheet metal on this car are quite straight. and totally rust free. The exceptions are fenders which do have some denting issues here and there. but no rust issues. For the most part these are all of a minor nature and would be easily repaired without the use of filler by someone who knows how to use a hammer and dolly. The worst is the edge of the right front fender. The undersides of the fenders show surface rust. with some original paint still visible. The hood top panels are quite straight with only a couple of very minor soft dents. The side panels are nice and straight without damage or rust. They have all original hardware and leather rear corner pads. The front cowl. doors. door sills. body quarters. and rear body panel are all in very nice condition. no rust. The splash pan below the rad and the side aprons above the running boards are all in nice shape. The wood running boards are new but will need matting. INTERIOR:The interior is in original survivor condition. except for the removal of the headliner. wood grained garnish moldings. rear window pull down blind. and upper door jambs caps and door stops. All these parts are with the car. nothing is missing. One of the window crank handles is broken. The interior is in well-worn condition. but not dreadful. Great for patterns and samples. This car does not appear to have ever had any serious rodent problem. Front floor mat is original. as is the lino covering the rear floor I believe. The painted dash houses very nice original instruments including speedometer. odometer and trip odometer. fuel. amp. and oil pressure gauges. No temp gauge so you’ll need to get a moto-meter for the radiator. Nice original wood steering wheel in good shape. Nice Bakelite horn button and shifter knob. Interior rear view mirror is de-silvered. Exterior mounted vacuum wiper motor removed but with the car. All glass is original. The windshield rolls upwards to allow for ventilation. Door windows roll up and down smoothly. Rear window glass removed and broken in 2 pieces. easily replaced as it’s all flat glass. BRIGHTWORK:All brightwork on the car is in original condition. and it appears that it is all nickel plated. not chrome. Both bumpers are straight. Of the 4 aluminum hubcaps. one is bent. The radiator shell is nice and straight without dents or damage. but the plating is fading and starting to give way to surface rust. Nice original Chief of the Sixes emblem. The Indian head hood mascot is of a different year. as it is just a tad too big for the rad threads. A moto-meter would be appropriate given the absence of a temp gauge on the dash. The original painted headlamp and tail lamp buckets are in very nice shape with no dents or rust. The nickel plated brass headlamp rings are not dented but have a few cracks. Tail lamp ring has one little nick. no cracks. All glass lenses are very nice. none broken. Headlamp lenses are nice Tilt-Ray. Spare parts include 2 extra wheel rims and a rim spreader. SUMMARY:This is an excellent and affordable car to enter the hobby with and introduce the family to the fun of antique cars. without a ton of money or work required before it goes down the road. It will need new tires. battery and top covered. at that point you could start driving it. This is an honest car with no hidden secrets. From the perspective of a potential restoration project. it’s an ideal candidate given how complete. solid. and unmolested this car is. The basis is here for an easy. inexpensive. highly correct restoration. You won’t be spending years or tons of money trying to find missing parts. or performing extensive woodwork or rust repairs. The wood is done. the paint is included. and the upholstery is simple. With low mileage. most of the ‘hard’ parts would not be worn out.
