Classic 1970 'cuda withpossible originaldrivetrain.
This is a real Cuda and NOT a Barracuda.
The previous owner bought this 1970 Cuda in 1974!! His high school graduation tassle stillhangs from the rear view mirror. Classic! He bought it in '74, and took her to every local 1/4 mile track he could on the Northeast drag circuit. Just think, this 340 Cuda was around all the drag racing legends like Ronnie Sox & Martin, Dick Landy, Grumpy Jenkins, etc.. It was awesome listening to him tell the stories about these legends being only isles over, and racing down the same track as him and his Plymouth. He obviously loved to get it since he states the rear is a 5.13 with super stock springs! What's also wicked is that the tow bar is still there that he used to flat-tow this 'cuda to all the circuit tracks. Tracks like Englishtown, Atco, and the Dover Drag Strip!! He loved talking about getting into the 12's in this small block 340 4 speed car. Whenothers went to automatics, he stayed true to the manual tranny 4 speed in order to bang out the gears himself. My type of guy! Funny story is that he removed the original Pistol grip shifter so he could catch 3rd gear better. It wasn't about looks with this Spartan ride. It was about getting in and getting it!!
The owner said it had the two power bulge hood on it, the 340 stripes, Toro Red, black gut with no console, the hurst pistol grip shifter, and steel wheels with thedogfish caps on it when he bought it in '74. That's a pretty cool 'cuda if you wanted to bring it back to that nice low optioned Spartan look.
The way it looks with the big slicks, slot mags,cragars (had skinny's on them butwouldn't hold air), track stickers, track hood, and short stalk shifter w/ the line lock is how he ran it from the mid 70's to the late 70's! Then he parked it behind his families business where it sat for the last 40+ years!! As life went on with him raising his family, the 'cuda remained in the back of the family shop. Always with the hope of one day taking her back out to the track. As life usually does, it passes us by fast and we end up putting our dreams further and further away to help our own families. Atestamentto that is that this Mopar man decided to finally let his Cuda go so he could help his daughter with one of her dreams. He also wants someone to bring this 'cuda back to life!
He said he took the original 340 engine out and had another 340 built out to race on the track circuit. He eventually blew that motor up at the track. 5.13's will do that! lol! So, he took the original engine out of storage, rebuilt that one, and put it back in the 'cuda. He believes it is the original engine that came with the '70. I've decoded the engine in the front under the driver side head. The numbersstates it's a 340, and there is an iron cross symbol also stamped on the block. I'm uncertain of what that means, but I know it means something. On the underside of the passenger side of the engine I can make out 0R182. I know the 0 is for a '70 engine, so it looks like things are checking out.The 182 is in the vin but thats the last 3digits. I'm not exactly sure how Mopar did it. I've had some GM cars where the line workers were a little dyslexic or grabbed whatever engine was on the shelf. There are pictures of the stamped codes, so please evaluate for your self.
I always wanted a '70 cuda, and my plan is/was to bring this one back for myself. I've built a lot of cars and never had a 'cuda. They just don't come up too often. Sure there's barracudas out there, but how many real 1970 'cudas do you see? This one will take too muchtime for me, and I already have 3 projects in the pipeline. Please note that I have two ofthose projects up for sale locally with the hopes that one of them sell 1st so I can get this Plymouth Cuda back to it's original glory!!
The 340 v8 engine looks to be a true '70 H-code block, and might be the original engine. Remember that the 383 was the factory engine for Cuda's, so you had to special order Cuda's with the 340 block. There are pictures of the engine codes for you to review. The rear is also suppose to be the original 8 3/4 with later installed 5.13 gears. The trans is also suppose to bethe original 883 4 speed manual gearbox tranny. The previous owner said these were thedrivetrainconponents when he purchased the Plymouth in '74.
The interior is a Black bucket seat 4 speed on the floor no console interior. The dash is the no option spartan dashwith thereverse light for 4speed cars. Apartial build sheet waslocated under one of the front seats. That will obviously be included withthe purchase of the 'cuda project.
This is a project so it obviously needs work. The original paint looks to be Toro Red. The longtime owner said the engine was rebuilt in the late 70's right before it was parked. No Vinyl Top! There is evidence of Toro Red overspray in the trunk, cowl, frame rails, etc.. The body has it's bad and good. I take a ton of pictures so people can know what they are buying, and that's why I have a 100% rating. Look at all the pictures after this description to form your own opinion.
