1960 Plymouth Fury

Hard to find model
Beautiful condition
Rare options

Here up for bids on eBay is this stunning Plymouth Fury convertible. Relatively rare, just over 7000 Fury convertibles were made for 1960, and only a few hundred are accounted for today. I bought this car from a fellow WPC club member who had owned it for 15 years. Well optioned, the car has PS, PB, front fenderwell "Sport Shields", front bumper guard, Highway Hi-Fi radio and record player, padded dash, dual mirrors, Torqueflite transmission, chromed rear wheel skirts and "Sport Deck" trunk lid.

Originally Desert Beige, the car has had a full repaint in the factory colors of Chrome Green Poly (metallic) with Oyster White fender accents. The color change was comprehensive, from the trunk to inner door jambs, with all trim and weatherstripping removed beforehand. The paint finish is beautiful and displays excellent application and prep, this is nice paint. The body is very solid with all original sheet metal and no rust problems, undercarriage included.
Tires are high quality BF Goodrich Silvertown radials, all 4 wheelcovers are in excellent condition.

All of the car's chrome is in good condition, the rear bumper has been rechromed, the remainder is original. None of it shows any pitting, although the rear tail light assemblies show areas of minor crazing on close inspection, click to enlarge the 4th photo below.

The fins on this car were actually called 'stabilizers' by the marketing staff at Plymouth, they were advertised as reducing the need for steering correction in crosswinds by 20%. Probably true.

The chromed rear skirts both look like new. The optional "Sport Deck" trunk lid adds an extra visual flair to the car in case you missed the fins. Trunk has been refinished and carries a matching spare and factory jacking equipment. Shown also are a pair of super rare dealer display paper floor mats.

The car comes with a large assortment of brochures and ephemera, as well as a shop manual and display items. Also included is a fitted flannel car cover.
The front grill is clean and straight with no damage. Lights and lenses are all in very nice condition.

The front bumper still wears its original chrome with only minor imperfections, looking pretty great after 56 years. All of the car's glass are Solex originals except for the windshield. It's an older replacement that's in great shape - crystal clear with no damage.

Both mirrors are in outstanding condition, the "Sport Shield" fender inserts are as well. Nice emblems left and right.

The power top operates smoothly and latches down easily.

Very clean interior with only a minor scuff on the right side of the driver's seat backrest (see 3rd and 4th photo), otherwise pretty well mint.

Clean footwells, door panels and back seat. All new weatherstripping throughout the car. Windows all wind smoothly, locks all work.

The soft-top boot fits well and snaps in place easily. At one point someone made the misguided decision to install pins for a tonneau cover, they've since been replaced with the black plastic plugs you see in the 2nd photo below. As they say, it is what it is.
All switchgear operates correctly, the power top control has been moved to a toggle at the bottom of the dash. Lights, horn and wipers all work correctly, the turn signal stalk is a little loose but does function. The unique ribbon speedometer works but makes a little noise when it's under 10mph. Clock works when it wants to. Fuel and temp gauge are accurate. The mileage reading of 56K was said to be actual, and the numbers on the odometer do line up perfectly, but due to its age the car is sold mileage exempt.

The padded dash is in great condition. The radio works well but the record player will need some attention to get it functional again. I also need to mention that the heater core has been bypassed and will need to be replaced or repaired. The fan and plenums all work as they should.

The car runs and drives very well, it starts at the flick of the key and provides good power to move down the road with ease. The 2V 318 doesn't smoke or tick, the car comes with a stack of paperwork that show good maintenance over the years. Service receipts include work done for a rebuilt transmission, rebuilt carb, all new brake lines and hoses, new master cylinder and added electronic ignition.

Very nice undercarriage showing pristine 56 year old steel where the undercoating has flaked off. New driveline and U-joints. The car also has an all new exhaust and the manifolds were resurfaced at that time with new gaskets installed. The Magnaflow mufflers have a nice understated rumble that adds to the enjoyment of the top down cruising in this unique Mopar convertible.
