1991 Peugeot 405 Mi16 - daily driver quality, some cosmetic wear, runs great!
Hey all,
I'm selling my 1991 Peugeot 405 Mi16 so we can put a down payment on a house with a barn for other French and classic cars! Will be sad to let it go but I've decided to hang onto my '89 405DL with 70k because that car has more sentimental value to us!
*Please read whole ad before bidding. Car is being sold in as/is condition with no written or implied warranty. No refunds will be accepted and seller has the right to end auction early as car is being sold locally as well.*
So let's start with the car itself. These US spec 405's were built in France and sold in the USA from 88-91. This is the last year and the most desirable 405 (the Mi16) in the US. It has 150 horse power coming from a twin-cam 1.9L motor and has, of course, a 5 speed manual transmission. It isn't a scorcher by modern standards, but it is a nicely balanced, great handling, retro ride with awesome character! The 405 won the European car of the year in '88 and millions have been sold worldwide! Sadly the 405's never stood a chance in the US because Peugeot never had a solid dealer network and Peugeot as a brand phased out of the USA in 1991.
Here are the specifics on our Mi!
I would consider this car a daily driver car. It has cosmetic wear but is driven daily about 30 miles per day. The timing belt and waterpump were done by previous owner at Ramsey Peugeot repair in NJ all within the last 10,000 miles. I bought this car from the same owner of which I purchased my 405DL and both were maintained mechanically to a very high standard.
The engine runs very strong, and transmission shifts great. The clutch does not slip but is not new by any means. I would say that by the time you get it to 200,000 miles you may want to consider replacing it. The heat and air conditioning work great. The gauges all work accurately in the car. It runs at a normal temperature, fans kick on when they should, and oil pressure/temp gauge accurate and in range! The front tires are newer Michelin's and the rear tires have about 50% life remaining. The brakes are all in good shape and ABS works as it should. The sway bar bushings and links make a little crunching noise over bumps but over all handles great. These are not a safety issue, but just a noise for the sake of full disclosure.
I have a clean Massachusetts title for the car in my name. The chassis of the car is great. No rust on the body but there are scuffs, small dings and bruises around. The undercarriage is also rust free and needs no attention. The paint is holding up well but could stand a professional buffing to rid it of scratches (Sorento Green seems to scratch easy) and made the slightly faded areas shine. There is slight paint fade around gas door and on trunk lid. Other than those noted items, the black rubberized plastic on the bumper does show it's age (this guy is 26 years old now!) Painted outer mirror cover missing on one side but mirrors work and are intact.
Interior on this car is pretty solid. Leather seats are holding up well though the drivers side bolster shows some where. The rear seats are excellent as is the right front seat. The glove box had previously been removed by former owner but I will supply a new glove box with all the fixings and put in trunk (I don't have time to install sadly). The radio works though some speakers may need to be replaced. The car has a power sunroof that works great. Power windows work, one switch may be bad but will include extras in a box with purchase. The heat works as it should as does the air conditioning. Passenger power seat belt inoperative. All lights work outside and inside of car. The drivers side seat height adjuster is missing so you cannot adjust seat height though it is set in a good mid range position for most drivers. The backrest does adjust as it should as does the seat slide for and aft as it should. The car, again, is a driver and could use a full interior detail, but the parts are there and it is just such fun to drive.
The engine bay is clean and well sorted. Again, most work was done by Peugeot specialist Ramsey's in NJ. Pulls hard and strong and has been reliable for the previous owner and myself.
Again, this is a 26 year old French car. It is one you can hop in and drive. It will need the easy cosmetics and some buffing to make it a show winner but the bones are there and is a great starting point if that is what you want. I personally think it is best suited for weekend driving or even daily commuting! As stated above, because of the age of the vehicle, there is no written or implied warranty. Great condition 405 Mi16's are selling on Bring a Trailer and other high end auction sites between $5,000 and $7,000 and those numbers will surely rise as they age and become more rare. I have mulled over the price and think I have it listed reasonably and fairly for it's condition. Please feel free to ask any questions or come by and check it out if local. If I wasn't getting ready to buy a house I would surely hang onto this one!
*Again, seller has the right to end auction early as it is also being sold locally. No written or implied warranty due to age of vehicle and is being so in as/is condition. This is a driver quality car with cosmetic wear.
Thanks for reading and looking. Please message any questions and I will respond within 24 hours.
