Car description

1938 HENNEY-PACKARD Formal LIMOUSINE FUNERAL COACH

Featured on page 108 of the CARVED-PANEL HEARSES, an illustrated History 1933-1948 by Walter M. P. McCall and Thomas A. McPherson, this coach was said to be ”Henney's response to the carved-panel hearses sold by all of its major competitors. It was offered between 1938 and 1940. The Formal features chrome-trimmed art deco on the car's side and rear doors. The supplemental exterior trim extends to the tops of the doors. Inlaid wood panels on the insides of the doors duplicate the exterior trim motif." This coach is also equipped with Henney's Nu-3 Way side-servicing feature as well as Henney's Leveldraulic adjustable suspension which enables the coach to be levelled when at curbside to allow side-servicing with ease.

This 1938 Packard Coach has VIN# 1601A2229. Body # 9063. Model 880L. The engine is a Packard 8 cylinder. # A309492 which runs very strong. The coach travels well at 50 mph.

This Henney is equipped with aftermarket turning signals. The headlights, taillights and interior dome light all work. The engine compartment is clean and rust free.

Everything on this coach works. Even the horn. The odometer which is also operational shows 30,060 original miles. The coach is mechanically sound and can only be described as very solid all around. It appears to have undergone a complete frame-off restoration some time ago. The time lines of this restoration are unknown to me. The undercarriage is virtually flawless. The body does show some minor signs of age (cracking paint on the driver's side front fender as well as the passenger's side rear fender however there is no surface rust on the car. These markings seem to add character to the car's appearance. All doors open and close very well. The windshield as well as all glass in the car is perfect. The driver's and passenger's windows open and close perfectly. There is virtually no sag to the side doors whatsoever. The interior dressed in blue velvet shows very well.

In order to move this car from a strong 8 to a 10, the coach would require new paint and a re-covering of the running boards (material on hand), and the replacement of one hub cap (not matching).

The coach is presently offered for use to families in our community. It runs and shoes beautifully.

A rare treasured example of Henney's Quality, Craftsmanship and attention to detail.
