1966 COPO CHEVROLET CORVETTE COUPE BRASS HATINVESTMENT GRADE - IRON CLAD PROVENANCE
There were 1000's of COPO Camaros produced, but there is thought to be less than 100 COPO Corvettes produced....
This 1966 COPO Chevrolet Corvette coupe is a "Brass Hat" car originally ordered through a Central Office Production Order (COPO) for Chevrolet's National Sales Manager, Joe Pike, as his company car. Joe Pike was known as Mr .Corvette and was named as one of the most influential people in Corvette history and was also inducted into the National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame as a founding member.
The car was ordered with the 327/350 L79, Muncie M21 4 speed, 3.70 posi rear end, AC, side exhausts, KO wheels, Silver Pearl paint and blue leather interior. The color combination is thought to be a 1 of 1 as there is no other documented 1966 with blue leather since it was not available as an option in 1966. The car was built on April 7, 1966 and delivered to the GM Company Car garage as per the COPO order form. Following Mr. Pikes ownership, the car was transferred to Turnball Chevrolet in Detroit. It was subsequently owned in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Ohio before its current Florida home. This C2 participated in the 2016 Bloomington Gold 50 Year Celebration at Indianapolis, as well as the 2016 MCACN Corvette Legends Invitational.
The car was with a Virginia based owner from 1984 - 1994 and during this period the exterior was repainted in the original Silver Pearl (986AA) with a correct lacquer base and poly top coat. The finish shows well with minimal small road chips at the front and some scratches to the front right bumper (no denting). The car is upholstered in blue leather with matching carpets, and the interior trim is original. Some wear is apparent on the front seats and carpeting shows some light fading but with no wear. The glove box has two small indentations in the face of the door. The KO wheels wear Bridgestone Silvertowne Gold Line tires at 15 x 7.75".
The L79 short block was replaced with a Chevrolet Service Warranty block at the GM Garage with a correct Corvette 327 block which carries number CE3959512. The original ancilliaries were reused including the carb, alternator, air cleaner, valve covers and radiator. The transmission and rear end are original to the car.Optional equipment includes a telescopic steering wheel column, power windows, power brakes, AM/FM radio, day/night mirror and tinted glass. The factory A/C is charged with R12 and blows cold. The factory jack, spare and KO hammer are present.
In 1996, the Pennsylvania based owner had the engine bored .030" over and fitted with new rings and pistons. The crank was turned, new bearings were installed and the cylinder heads were rebuilt with new seals and hardened valve seats for use with unleaded gas. A new clutch and camshaft were also installed. The carburetor was sent to Holley for a rebuild and replating
Documentation includes copies of both the COPO order form and original inspection report with Mr Pike's name and the VIN. As well, there is a 3 ring binder that contains the NCRS Shipping Report and certification as well as the Bloomington Gold 50th certificate and records from the previous owners.
