1987 Chevrolet Callaway Twin-Turbo Corvette THE LEGENDARY B2K OPTION. VERY RARE! The Old Oregon Motor Company presents: 1987 Chevrolet Callaway Twin-Turbo Corvette. Black/Black. Two owners. 25K miles from new. The legendary RPO B2K option. sold and warranted by Chevrolet dealers. was the only time when a factory RPO order number was assigned to a non-GM performance enhancement on a Corvette. All B2K orders went down the regular assembly line in Bowling Green and were completely assembled with a normally aspirated engine. After completion. however. the cars were shipped to Old Lyme. Connecticut. where the twin-turbo engine installation. as well as the other Callaway-specific modifications. were carried out. Though it was obviously redundant to install engines into cars that would soon have those engines replaced. the procedure allowed the Callaways to be built side-by-side with standard Corvettes without any interruptions or modifications to the normal assembly process in Bowling Green. Low-compression forged-aluminum Cosworth or Mahle pistons spun a forged. gas-nitride steel crankshaft. while a high-output Melling oil pump ensured adequate lubrication at all times. A dry-sump oiling setup delivered a constant supply of pressurized oil to the turbo bearings. as well as the rest of the engine. Stock aluminum cylinder heads were re-machined and fitted with stainless-steel intake and exhaust valves and stronger valve springs. All machine work was extremely precise and each engine’s entire reciprocating assembly was very carefully balanced to ensure smooth and reliable power through the engine’s entire operating range. The transmission and cooling system were also upgraded to handle the added power and heat output. Maximum boost came at just 2000rpm. Just 184 of these Twin-Turbo screamers were delivered in 1987. the springboard that allowed Callaway Engineering to be the successful manufacturer and Le Mans competitor that they would become. Performance is 4. 6 seconds from 0-60mph. a 13 second 1/4 mile. and a 178mph top speed. The option cost a staggering $19. 95 in 1987. on top of the MSRP of $27. 95 for the base Corvette. This car was purchased new in Portland by Dan Hanna. founder of Hanna Car Washes and who was also a Newman-Hass-Mario Andretti sponsor in the 1980's. This car even served as a the pace car for the G. I. Joe's Portland 200 Indycar race. The second and current owner. who knew Reeves Callaway and was instrumental in acquiring the Callaway franchise for Ron Tonkin. purchased the car in 1991. Since then. less than 2K miles have been added to the car's 25K total. Every record kept. including original documentation. is in a massive history file which includes many period feature publications. The car has some minor cosmetic issues. some weather-stripping and trim need to be replaced. All systems appear functional. including the complex multi-function Recaro seats. but the AC system probably has never had a recharge. The tires are also hard and mis-matched. and should be replaced. The car would then clean up beautifully. The performance is phenomenal! This car is FAST. and not for the novice driver. This is the perfect collectible supercar for someone to just clean up a little and simply use as-is.
