This is an exceptional find for the collector who takes pride in the ownership of a rare convertible with the benefit of a Concours-quality restoration on a completely rust-free car to start with. This DeSoto Series S3 Rumbleseat Convertible Coupe is without question the finest example in the world. Benefiting from the original factory accessories such as the perfectly operating Philco radio with running board antennas[24 ft. in all], to the great-working original heater, installed turn signals, seat belts and NOS locking gas cap with keys.
Best of all is this car's power. It is very fast due to the Factory Overdrive and factory stock Dual Carburetors utilizing the original intake and exhaust manifolds. The dual carb setup was built by the nation's foremost authority on speed equipment, none other than 91 year old George Ashe Jr. of Pennsylvania. Traveling and exceeding speeds of any highway you put it on! The original engine was fully rebuilt with new cams and valves. The overdrive unit works remarkably well for that extra boost. And the 80 year old original radio sounds better than the ones in modern cars.
With an original total production number of only 992, it's likely that you may not see another like this one. 1937 saw DeSoto drop the Airflow and re-engineer an all new car incorporating the best engineering from the Airflow era. Take a close look at the design details of this "rolling art". On a historical design note of the 1930's, the "Art Deco" era was influencing automobile design as well. For this 1937 DeSoto, it is well noted by the beautiful design of the grill extending into the fenders which received a patent by well-known automobile designer Ray Dietrich.
In-line straight 6 cylinder 228 cu. in. 93 hp[without overdrive]. 3 speed transmission. 116" wheel base.
As a "complete" car in unrestored condition, to begin with, many years were spent searching for NOS parts to provide the best results possible for this restoration. This gorgeous car is Black with Spring Green leather interior and a Black Convertible Top, just exactly the way it left the factory in 1937. The leather was dyed perfectly to match it's original. Although named 'Spring Green' I would call it a light mint sage color; and is the reason I bought the car in the first place. This car needs absolutely nothing but to be shown, driven and enjoyed. It is as flawless as they come, period.
Yes, the undercarriage is just as detailed and flawless as the topside! Exhaust system is brand new and incorporates a 2" diameter pipe to accommodate the dual carbs. The original Sisson automatic chokes are on each carburetor just like it left the factory. All stock components and very fast.
The authenticity of the restoration includes the numerous original factory options like overdrive, in-dash radio with the rare "hidden" antenna under the running boards, banjo steering wheel, dual air-tone horns, heater and original NOS fender skirts. A large volume of original documentation, adverts, and technical manuals accompanies the sale.
It has been well sorted since the restoration, so you will enjoy it's good manners on the road as well. No disappointments here. I only own the finest examples of prewar motorcars; and this DeSoto certainly qualifies to be put in that category. This is simply the finest there is. Tom Griffith/Madison Wisconsin. 608-212-8774. NOTE: My phone number is above, to discuss 'reserve price' or interesting offers you must actually pick up the phone and call me. This tells me you are serious. I will NOT discuss price via email or text. Bank wire transfer is the ONLY method of payment I will accept. Why? Because of all the scams out there these days, this form of payment is the only truly 'secure' way to verify that funds are real.
