This fiberglass-bodied project car is one of only 142 hand built in 1978. Between 1963 and 2007 fewer than 3600 total Avantis were ever built. This car has a good body, chrome and glass and has been driven fewer than 5000 miles after the following work: a $2,000 complete front end rebuild, starter rebuilt, 4 bbl. Quadrajet carb rebuilt, TH400 transmission rebuilt with heavy duty clutches plus a new torque converter. Custom chrome wheels (see photos). One owner since 2000. Strong original Corvette 350 V8. Replaced catalytic converter, muffler and tailpipes, master cylinder and all ignition components. Car was running well and reliably when parked in 2007; carb rebuilt again in 2014 to be driven very briefly again. Has been parked since then. To make driveable, car needs battery, tires, and light mechanical work. To restore to its original classic beauty, it needs paint and interior work. I am selling this for less than I paid in 2000, and a small fraction of what it has cost since then just to do the major mechanical work. Restored Avantis sell for far more than $3500. Note that the last photo is of this car in 2006 and represents what it should look like after restoration. While quite rare this vehicle uses many common Chevy parts and there are several specialty parts suppliers for other parts, as well as strong national Avanti and Studebaker clubs for support. (About half of all Avantis were made in 1963-64 by Studebaker; from 1966 on they were made by Avanti Motors with Chevy engines and transmissions.) You won't see this head-turning car on every corner. Why restore just another Ford or Chevy? Instead you could be driving something really special. NOTE: THIS IS FOR SALE LOCALLY AND, IF SOLD, THIS LISTING MAY BE ENDED EARLY.
