1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 Original Paint Code 56 Sunfire Yellow Convertible or make yourself a 1972 Hurst Olds Indy Pace Car selling at "No Reserve" on a quick 5-day auction
If you have been looking for that classic muscle car investment to restore to drive around town and be the pride of the neighborhood or for obtaining a substantial profit then thisrare classic muscle car convertible may be exactly what you've been looking for. The Autumn Season just started, so this upcoming winter can turn out to be very profitable for the winning bidder.
When this convertible was new this was not your Father's Oldsmobile unless you had the cool Dad on the block. I don't know of any guys out there that wouldn'tlove a Sunfire Yellow 442 Convertible or a Hurst Olds Convertible. Very few seem to appear for sale much anymore or are even ever seen on the road for that matter. The question is! How many more realistic chances will there be left to find another convertible like this? Only the Lord knows when that final chance will be. Once they're all gone they're all gone.
These 1970's muscle cars have incredible investment potential and have often been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Why not make your money work for you while you enjoy restoring your dream car at the same time? The finished product is very rewarding when these cars are restored. Almost every part on these cars are reproduced in exact aftermarket replacement parts available at a wide variety of suppliers around the country at reasonable prices. You just have to find the right car to restore to make that dream come true. Remember! When the top goes down the price goes up!This is a quick 5-day "No Reserve" auction!
If you simply double click on the main picture of the auction page then all 24 pictures will be able to be viewed in the larger size by clicking the arrows on each side of the larger pictures.
The gentleman I purchased this rare convertible from lives in Triadelphia, West Virginia. He said he was the 2nd owner. I recently had the title transferred to my name, so the title is open, clean, and clear issued from the State of Wisconsin in my name. I just showed a copy of the prior title that I received when I made the purchase to verify this was previously a West Virginia car at point of purchase. The mileage on the odometer appears to have rolled over once. Back in those days they only recorded five digits and the tenths of a mile. In most states on cars over 10 years old or older the fresh title's odometer readings usually appear as not required or exempt. According to the gentleman I made the purchase from the last time this convertible was licensed and roadworthy was in the early 2000's. The previous owner had started trying to restore this classic droptop and gave up.
I have more projects than I feel I have time left on this earth, so this restoration will be left up to the winning bidder or it can be set-up to make it a daily driver in its current condition. This would be an awesome candidate for a 1972 Hurst Oldsmobile Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Convertible Recreation. This Olds does have a Rocket 350 engine with the correct casting numbers 395558 for a 1972 model with those numbers located above the water pump paired up with a Turbo-Hydromatic 400 transmission that powers this convertible. These cars typically came with a Turbo 350, so I believe that was a nice upgrade.
This particular model was ordered with several more options than your average Oldsmobile convertible back in those days.I will explain everything I learned at point of purchase from the previous owner as well as what I know about this rare convertible. There is a brand new air cleaner filter inside the air cleaner. There is a newer fuel pump and this Rocket engine fires right. This engine sounds very strong. There are a pair of brand new front pipes on each side of the engine for that true dual sound with some nice Chrome Sonic Turbo Mufflers attached to each side of the new front pipes. It does sound rather loud, so the new owner may want to go back to a factory dual exhaust system.
The only time I have driven this car was when it was delivered from West Virginia around the corner onto my property, and to take the pictures with Matilda a couple blocks away. I drove it around the neighborhood after the photo shoot and all the gears shifted the way they should. Mattie had a wonderful time, but she will not be included in the sale.
Steering these carsis simply a delight with the 442 Sport steering wheel. These cars typically have finger tip control and drive down the road straight as an arrow. There is a Duracell Procell Premium Gold 840 Cold Cranking Amp battery with 1010 Cranking Amps to power this Rocket engine right up. Power brakes stop this convertible, and I have not seen any leaking under the car since I've owned it. There is also a brand new radiator, brand new voltage regulator, and a brand new gas tank along with new gas tank straps. Those items were installed by the previous owner. The original 1972 Oldsmobile Owner's Manual shown in the last picture will be enclosed in the glove box.
The head lights and the bright lights all work as they should. The tail lights have all four brand new bulbs inside the tail lights. The interior looks in relatively nice condition as seen in the pictures. There is a full set of five seat belts still in place. The drivers bucket seat is power, but not hooked up. Getting the power mechanism connected will be up to the new owner. I do know power bucket seats are quite expensive to purchase nowadays, so that's a nice option to have. The pattern on the front bucket seats is not correct for 1972, so to bring this car up to the next level the new owner will probably want to have them recovered to match the correct back seat pattern. The bucket seats were not completely bolted down for that reason. If I were restoring this car I would have the front bucket seats reupholstered, but I have to say they are very comfortable, and in good condition the way they are. The carpet still looks in decent condition, and a new set of four deluxe black carpeted floor mats were purchased in preparation for this sale. The original floors all look in good solid condition just like the picture shown. Being a West Virginia car is why I believe this convertible held up as well as it has over the past 48 years. I've never had this car up on a lift, but from everywhere I looked the frame appears in good condition as well.
There is an original AM/FM in the dash along with a factory 8-track player mounted below the dash. I don't believe either of those items are hooked up, but they are very valuable to have when doing a restoration like this. New wiper blades and a new washer fluid container were installed last week in preparation for this sale. This convertible has the rare air conditioning option for back in those days on a droptop. Mostly all of the components are present and attached in the correct place including the a/c compressor, but there is no belt. Getting the air conditioning functioning again will be left up to the new owner if they so desire. At least having that option available is a nice feature to have.
These older classics that have survived for nearly half a century are becoming harder and harder to find with each passing year especially in Code 56 Sunfire Yellow. The data plate is shown to prove that this is an original factory ordered paint code 65 Sunfire Yellow convertible as ordered when purchased brand new in 1972. I saw signs of the original Sunfire Yellow paint inside the door jambs and the trunk compartment. The prior owner chose to cover the body with Black primer. If I were going to restore this convertible I would definitely have it painted the original code 56 Sunfire Yellow to bring it back to its former glory.
I did not see any signs of this convertible being involved in any type of accidents. The prior owner told me that he had recently replaced the windshield and replaced both the front and the rear bumpers, so the chrome does look nice on both bumpers. The suspension has this body sitting up really nice. There are rear air shocks in case the new owner wants to adjust the rear suspension. I raised the rear shocks up a couple inches before I went for pictures. I believe that all the panels on this convertible can be used in the restoration. The W-25 dual snorkeled Ram-Air hood is locked in place with the chrome twistdowns attached to the core support. The hood hinges are brand new. The 442 grille's are original factory 1972 genuine GM grille's.
The convertible top material is missing, but a brand spanking new white convertible top and back window are included in this sale. I do have a white tarp attached to the top frame to seal the interior from the elements. The top motor does function in the up and down position from the switch located in the dash, but the top cylinders were disconnected to put the top down easily. Those top cylinders will need to be reattached when the new top is installed, but the correct bolts are attached in place. Those two bolts will need to be re-installed by whoever installs the new top. A white California convertible top boot is also included with this sale. The entire body will need to be restored and freshened up with the supplied Sunfire Yellow paint or whatever color the winning bidder decides. I am including the correct paint code 56 in base coat enamel that I had specially mixed at my local Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts Store along with the correct activator, and reducer. Those items are included in the trunk. All four wheel opening moldings are still attached on all four wheel wells. This convertible could really use the white W-30 stripes on the ram-air hood and the sides of this car during the fresh restoration. In my opinion the white stripes would increase the value of this convertible tremendously.
With each passing year it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find an original Sunfire Yellow 442 with a bucket seat interior in a convertible. Everyone who knows these cars knows this color is very difficult to find, especially with these many options as well as one of the most desirable color combinations.
The options on thisOldsmobileinclude Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Convertible Top, Air Conditioning, W-25 Ram-Air Dual Snorkel Ram-Air Hood, Factory Oldsmobile AM/FM Stereo, Factory 8-track player, Power Drivers Bucket Seat, Console with the Dual Gate "His and Hers" Shifter, 442 Sport Steering Wheel, Dual Exhaust, and Super Stock II 15" inch wheels.
According to the OldsFaqs websiteonly 1,025 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models were made with an automatic transmission in 1972. They said whethera particularmodel is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly.I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S,and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealershipas a true442. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model up until 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972.
The OldsFaqs website made the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether a Cutlass Supreme Convertible was factory ordered as a 442, or dealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door, and all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door.
There is a complete set of four P235 60R/15 inchB.F. Goodrich Radial T/Araised white lettered steel belted radial tires with nice tread mounted on 15" inch Super Stock II wheels. All four Super Stock II wheels have all four center caps, all four beauty trim rings, and all 20 chrome lug nuts. This convertible has a 10-bolt rear-end,but I am unaware of the gear ratio. The trunk compartment has had some minor patchwork, but was coated with A/C Delco spatter spray to make it appear factory correct, and a brand new trunk mat was placed on the trunk floor. There is a nicely detailed jack, jack stand, bumper mount, and crow bar with a full size Super Stock II spare tire.
The J.D. Power Nada Classic Car Price Guide that anyone can look up online currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible with the Rocket 350/180 horsepower V8 engine L-34 option with air conditioning listed at$73,945in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
Nada has the average condition listed at$50,715, which theyconsider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a20-Footer!
Nada hasthe lowest condition value at$33,350being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. I believe whatever this classic convertible sells for in this "No Reserve" auction is a win/win proposition.
The J.D. Power Nada numbers don't lie! This Classic Convertible is a very valuable automobile if it is given the proper restoration. The Mecum Indianapolis live auction on NBCSN sold the 1972 Sunfire Yellow Cutlass Supreme/442 Convertible on Star Car Saturday this past July 18th for $85,000. I showed a picture of that car crossing the auction block, so people who view live auctions know what these muscle cars are capable of bringing at each live auction throughout the year. The 1970-1972 Cutlass/442 Convertible muscle cars always bring strong numbers whenever I watch.
This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have consistently shown to escalate in value with each quarter. If this convertible is restored correctly the only item needed to make this Sunfire Yellow Convertible visually appear identical to the one sold at Mecum in July would be the Whale Tail rear spoiler. Those can be purchased for around $250 dollars at several muscle car part suppliers. That one that sold for $85,000 did not have the cool Dual Gate shifter. What you see is exactly what you get!
Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nominal price. Maybe this classic is for the guy or gal that wanted one like the cool guy had in high school. After this car is restored this would be an idealconvertible to show up at the next high school reunion to prove how cool you still are. This convertible would also be a great father and son project to bond as a family unit. It would also be a great project for a high end muscle car restoration shop that restores these cars to showroom condition to take them to live auction to receive the big payday.
I've tried to list everything I could think of about this car when writing this description. If you feel I may have left anything out please ask as many questions as you like. Please make sure you have your funds in order prior to placing your bid. If you need permission from a significant other please ask them prior to placing your bid. The PayPal deposit is due within 24 hours and the balance is to be paid in full within 72 hours. I do have some great contacts for shipping and will pass that information along to the winning bidder.
This Classic Convertible is being offered on a quick 5-day "No Reserve" auction and will sell to the highest bidder on Sunday evening at 8pm Eastern time, 7pm Central time, and 5pm Pacific time. Bid only what you feel this car is worth to you.
Thank you for taking the time to view my auction!!!

Someone brought to my attention The Data Plate shows the Original Paint Code as 56 Sunfire Yellow, not 65. That was a simple typo I thought I would point out.
